Lowell Turner, formerly of
Heppner is starting his 28th year
as a pilot for American Arlines.
With some 27 years seniority he
was one of the more junior pilots
to be awarded MD-11 captain
training.
After three weeks of ground
school in Texas, and because of
a shortage of flight similator time,
American sent him and his wife,
Mary to Gatwick, England. He
had about 10 days training at the
british Caledonian similator, ear­
ning a captain’s rating on the
MD-11. The Turners also had
time to spend a couple of en­
joyable days touring London.
The MD-11 is a two-pilot,
three-engine jumbo jet manufac­
tured by McDonnell Douglas in
Long Beach, California. “ The
MD-11 is the largest, longest

that American flies,” said
Turner. At maximum gross
weight, it tops the scales at
621,000 pounds. It takes 268,000
pounds of fuel to ‘fill’er-up” , ap­
proximately 41,230 gallons.
Each of its General Electric
CF6-80 turbo-fan engines will
produce 61,500 pounds of thrust
at maximum power. The MD-11
can carry 245 passengers, a crew
of 14 flight attendants and the
pilots. An extra co-pilot is re­
quired on the long international
flights.
Turner, a Heppner High
School graduate of the class of
1956 is now based in Chicago and
will be flying to Heathrow,
England and/or Frankfurt,
Germany.

The Morrow County Grain

Growers and the Brogoitti
Elevator Co.. Inc.. have all been
removed from the list of USGA
approved warehouses, according
to R.H. ‘Skip’ Matthews of the
Commodity Credit Corporation,
Morrow County ASCS office.
Morrow
County Grain
Growers, Lexington and
Pendleton Grain Growers, were
removed from the list because of
“ conditions noted during ex­
aminations which adversely affect
the interest of the Commodity
Credit Corporation,” said Mat­
thews. The Brogoitti Elevator
Co., Inc., Helix, was removed
"With the lower rates we've enjoyed
with SAIF, we're far more competitive
because the warehouse “ failed to
meet the net worth minimum re­
quired under the standards for ap­
proval of warehouses,” he said.
According to Matthews, the
removal means that producers
who store grain at any of the
companies can not get get an
ASCS loan. However, grain may
still be stored there and the grain
companies can still buy and sell
grain.
Larry Mills, manager of Mor­
row County Grain Growers, said
that the problem is “ just a mat­
ter of record keeping” and an­
ticipates that the suspension will
be only for a short time.
