They are selling fast.
After a short visit to Baker, I
have a great respect for the
pioneers who, if they didn’t leave
most of their treasured belongings
behind, had to before they reach
ed the end o f the trail. I gaze with
awe at the antique mirror in my
mother’s bedroom that came on
the trail with her great aunt and
wonder that it made it, a reminder
o f the home left behind. While
these treasures meant much to the
pioneer women, discarding them
along the trail was not nearly as
heartbreaking as burying so
meone every 80 yards. A trip
back in history can give us more
perspective on our lives today.

would return in a car with their
families on a later date and they
appreciated the hospitality. We
were sorry there were accidents.

Obituaries
Wayne Harsin
Wayne Harsin, 62, o f Forest
Grove, formerly o f Heppner,
died Saturday, May 1, 1993 at
Tuality Forest Grove Hospital.
At his request there were no
funeral services held. An Open
House was held on Saturday,
May 8 at the family home.
Mr. Harsin was bom June 7,
1930 at Baker City to W ilse and
Bertha Fairbanks Harsin. He
grew up in Baker City and attend
ed local schools.
On Dec. 6, 1951 he married
Loy C. Fossum at Baker City.
They moved to Wallowa and in
1953 moved to Heppner. They
lived in Heppner 18 years before
moving to Forest Grove in 1971.
Mr. Harsin was employed by
the city o f Heppner for 18 years
and had worked at the Unified
Sewerage Agency o f Washington
County in Forest Grove for the
past 22 years. He was currently
supervisor.
He was a member o f the Hepp
ner Elks Lodge and enjoyed
woodworking and camping.
Survivors include his wife, at
the home; sons Dallas o f Pilot
Rock and Kerry o f Forest Grove;
a daughter Cindy Heesacker o f
Forest Grove; a sister Helen
Sheldon o f Arvada, Colo, and six
grandchildren.

Maryan L. McElligott, 58, o f
lone, died Saturday, May 8, 1993
at her home.

Mrs. McElligott was bom Dec.
1, 1934, at The Dalles to Thomas
and Rosina Fleck Foley. She at
tended school at The Dalles and
graduated from The Dalles High
School. She earned an associate
degree from Marylhurst College.
On June 23, 1956, she married
L.J. “ Jerry” McElligott at The
Dalles. They lived at Rome,
N .Y ., Wichita, Kan., Santa
M aria, C a ., M inot, N .D .,
Portland and Fair Oaks, C A .,
before coming to lone in 1973.
Mrs. McElligott was noted for
her cake decorating and taught
adult education classes on cake
decorating through Blue Moun
tain Community College.
She was recognized as 1992
Woman o f the Year by the Mor
row C ounty C ham ber o f
Commerce.
She was a member o f St.
William Catholic Church and
Altar Society, the lone Topic
Club, the lone Cardinal Club and
the American Legion Auxiliary in
lone.
She had been a 4-H leader for
some 20 years.
Survivors include her husband
at the home; sons Michael o f
Omaha, Neb., Matthew o f Nam
pa Idaho, and Vincent o f Cen-
treville, VA; daughters Theresa
o f Newberg, Grace Romana o f
M em phis, T en n ., Janet o f
Washington, D .C ., Patricia o f
Miami, Fla., and Bridget o f lone;
sister Patricia O ’Hollaren o f
Batavia, 111 ; brother, Thomas
Foley o f Troy, Mich.; and four
grandchildren.

A summary of the budget is presented below. A copy of the budget may be inspected or obtained at
One hundred twenty-eight people attended the senior dinner May
5 with 10 guests present. Eleven dinners were taken out. Bernice
Nash won the meal ticket. Wilma Mabe the door prize and Neal
Nielon o f Pendleton received the guest prize. Members o f the Bap
tist and Christian Missionary Fellowship churches served. The meal
site committee met following the dinner.
The menu for dinner May 19 is pork patties, mashed potatoes,
gravy, Waldorf salad, hot roll and cobbler. Members o f the Episcopal
Church will serve.
Thursday morning the bus took 46 passengers from the lone, Lex
ington and Heppner area left for a Historical Society trip. They return
ed Sunday, reporting a very interesting time.
The senior bus went to Pendleton and severi seniors enjoyed din
ner and dancing at the Pendleton Senior Center. The bus has a full
load for the trip to John Day for lunch May 14. It will leave the senior
center at 8:30 a.m. It is also booked to capacity for the trip to Milton-
Freewater on Tuesday, May 18. The bus will leave Heppner at 9
a.m . and people will attend the senior dinner in Milton-Freewater.
Saturday, May 8, lunch was prepared by Marilyn Bergstrom
assisted by her btother, Gerald, and a host o f senior volunteers. Ap
proximately 75 bikers came in to eat.
There was only one table o f cards Friday afternoon and with a few
people visiting. Many o f the usual players were on the Historical
Society trip.
Eight apartment tenants watched the movie “ Man From Snowy
River" Sunday evening in the sitting room.
The VFW will meet W ed., May 19 at 7 p.m. in the sitting room.
Dates to remember: Monday, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Bible study, 1-4
p.m. quilting: Tues. & Thurs., 10-10:30 a.m. exercise; Wednesday,
noon senior dinner; Friday 2:30 p.m. cards, games and visiting; Satur
day, bus trip to Hermiston dance, 6:45 p.m .; Sunday movie, 7 p.m.
Heppner boys’ golf team
finishes eighth in state

The Heppner boy’s golf team
recently competed in the 2A state
tournament held in Salem this
past week. Peter Pearson led the
team to an eighth place finish out
o f 11 teams. Pearson shot an 84
on the par 72 course and finish
ed in the top 10.
Mark Moeller was next with a
92. followed by Chad Doherty
who shot a 103. Jeremy Maddern
was next with a 104 and Dan
Burnside shot a 109 to finish out
the Heppner scores.
Brian Gilder, son o f profes
sional golfer Bob Gilder, won the
overall title as he shot a 74. Lance
Holman was second with a 76 but
he led his team to a first place
finish for the Enterprise Savages

everything right! He found the pressure point to
stop the bleeding, remembered to pick up the
severed arm, and remained calm throughout the
rescue.
