Today there is no longer a north grandstand and bucking chutes due to the efforts of hardworking volunteers Team effort makes a big difference in progress in our community. I’m told a workday is planned for Saturday to load up all the debris and clean up the grounds. Look ing for a project? I’ll bet you will be more than welcome to volunteer for a few hours. Speaking of community pro jects, as many of you will remember you may have pur chased trees for Main Street two years ago. This project was put on hold due to the state highway project (our Main Street). The feeling was that trees should not be put in place only to be damag ed by highway and sidewalk renovation. To facilitate action, the Heppner Coordinating Coun cil and Heppner Economic Development is requesting that letters be written to the Oregon Department of Transportation, Senator Cooley and Represen tative Payne. Points to be ad dressed are deteriorated roadway, highcrown causing ice and snow buildup in gutters and sidewalks; no storm drains; safety due to condition of sidewalks: and in tersections which do not provide for the handicapped. It should be pointed out that communities such as Lebanon, Elgin, Myrtle Creek, Umatilla and Hermiston have had their Main Streets and sidewalks redone outside of the six-year plan and we would like to be in cluded. In the meantime, the tree fund is set aside with the donor names and who knows, some dark night a vigilante committee may just have a tree planning pro ject. Some of us are tired of waiting. Seriously, your patience is most appreciated and a tree- lined street will come to be. Next week will be chamber board meeting and business meeting. A few topics will be EOVA, housing. Main street, ‘93 committees, and Cycle Oregon VI. Thought for the week: “ Business is like riding a bicy cle; either you keep moving or you fall down’’...John David Wright.
