The 1600 relay team of Tryouts for minor league and T-ball will be held on Saturday, April I7 at 10a.m. and Tuesday, April 20 at 6 p.m. Both practices vs ill be held on. the lower fields at the Heppner Middle School. Kids need to bring a baseball mitt By A n n e M o rter and cap and should attend at least one practice. Everyone registered will be placed on a team. Coaches are still needed. District spelling contest slated The annual Morrow County School District spelling contest w ill be held Wednesday, April 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the lone High School. The top spellers in each atten dance area w ill compete in three divisions: Division 1 elementary through grade five: Division II gravies six through eight; and Division III tirades nine through 12 . The first place winners from each division of the district con test will qualify to participate in the state of Oregon spelling con test to be held at the Oregon State Fair in Salem Sept. 4. The public is welcome to observe the district contest. Diana Kincaid is in charge of local ar rangements at lone High School. The old record was held by Jackie Mollahan and Maureen Healy at 4 ’9’\ The track meet was the first meet of the season for the Hepp ner Junior High. Dickenson also placed fifth in the 100m hurdles. Lori Moeller finished fourth in the 300m hurdles and sixth in the 100m hurdles. The medley relay team con sisting of Mindy Qualls, Annie Hisler, Dickenson and Nicole Van Etta took a first place finish along with the 100 relay team of Hisler, Dickenson, Cimmie Huth and Lindsey Waterland. School teams faced tough questions and vied for top scores based on speed and ac curacy on the computer test. A team of 10 students at lone Elementary scored 638 points, good enough for eighth place na tionally among schools with an enrollment up to 200. They scored 185th out of 617 par ticipating schools and ranked sixth in the state behind schools from Portland. Members will meet at Helen Martin's home at 9:30 a.m. Anyone having surplus peren nials, trees or other plants they would like to share may contact garden club members and they will pick them up. The plant sale is set for April 27 at the Legion Hall in lone from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those that have special requests should contact Delta Huber, Pat Pettyjohn or Birdine Tullis. This is the third year lone has entered the com petition. Academic coach, Diana Kinciad said she was extremely proud of the students because everyone contributed, even the younger students. Team members were: fifth grade-Miranda McElligott, Erin Crowell and Mark McElligott; fourth grade-Charissa Gates, Shelby Krebs, Jeremy Rietmann and Jeremiah McElligott; third grade-Adam McCabe, Colin McElligott and Tara Cheney. This young team successfully competed against teams that were primarily fifth graders, said a press release. This Knowledge Master Open was designed to stimulate interest and recognition for academic ac complishment. The contest was developed to run on classroom computers without the expense of traveling to international contests at a central site. The 100m relay team of Gunderson, Gray, Jones and Schonbachler finished second while the medley relay of Cam Sweeney. Chris Jones and Jeff Watkins finished fifth. April 19 at the Lexington Grange. The evening will start at 6:30 p.m. with a potluck dinner. The South Morrow County communi ty choir will sing and the speaker for the evening will be Ben Boswell, state overseerer from Lostine. He will present 50 year certificates and pins. The pro gram w ill be opened to the public. A short business meeting will follow. The lone track teams competed in two meets last week with a three-way meet in Umatilla on Tuesday. April 6 and the Cherry Festival Invitational in The Dalles on Friday and Saturday, April 9 and 10. The boy’s team racked up 112 points to win the three-way meet over Heppner and Umatilla. The girls took second behind Hepp ner. The boys had 12 first place finishes for the day. Ryan Halvorsen and Mac Lovett were double winners. Halvorsen won the long jump 18’ l '/i” and triple jum p 39’3 ” while Lovett dominated the sprints, winning the 100 in 11.72 and the 200 in 24.53. He also ran a leg on the winning 400 relay, which clock ed a time of 47.1. Other team members were Greg Holtz, Deacon Heideman and Jim Logan. Other first place finishers were Jason Halvorsen in the high jump 5 '8 ” , Justin Miller in the pole vault H ’O” , Jim Logan in the 400 55.03, Tony Bjerke in the 110 hurdles 20.06. David Wagenblast in the 300 hurdles 48.16 and the 1600 relay team of Miller, Wagenblast, Jason Proud- foot and Logan in 3:46.75. The girls had four individual winners plus a first place in the 1600 relay. Becky Pieknell won the shot in 26'10” , Melissa McElligott took the long jump in 14'11” , Jamie Lovett won the discuss in 88'8” and Crystal Minster was first in the 400 in M inster, M cElligott, April Taylor and Becky Wagenblast were timed in 4:40.9. The Cherry Festival held in The Dalles boasted a large field and plenty of competition. The Cardinal boys tied with Heppner for fourth place with 38 points while the girls placed fourth with 40 points. On the boy’s side. Deacon Heideman continued his winning streak in the discus with a throw of 145’2 " . Third place finishes included Jim Logan in the 400 in 54.39, Justin Miller in the pole vault in lUO” and the 1600 relay team in 3:40.77. only a second off their district time from last year. The 400 relay team grabb ed fourth place in 47.54 and the two fifth place finishers were Deacon Heideman in the 110 hurdles in 17.29 and Mac Lovett in the 200 in 24.47. Rounding out the scoring was Jason Proudfoot, sixth in the 1500 in 4:47.79 and Ryan Halvorsen, sixth in the javelin in 136' 10” . Jamie Lovett grabbed the only first place on the girl’s side win ning the discus in 97'10” . Melissa McEligott took two thirds, in the long jump in 15' 6% ” and in the 100 in 13.6. The 1600 relay also was third in 4:39.31. April Taylor was fourth in the 1500 in 5:50.84 and McElligott was fourth in the tri ple jump in 30'7” . Fifth place finishes went to Tanja Anderson in the discus in 86'4‘/2” and Becky Wagenblast in the 800 in 2.43.8. lone boys compete against Helix By A n n e M o rter The lone boys tennis team finally got some court time, play ing at Helix last Saturday, April 10 but the outcome wasn't quite what they had hoped for. Helix swept the two doubles matches but the Cards managed a 2-2 split in singles play. Rob van‘t Ent, in the number one singles spot, defeated Doug Fine 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. Mike Green lost to Brian Brogoitti 1 -6 6-7 and Jerry Phillips fell to Greg Holton 4-8. Joey Baker defeated Rod Theis, 8-4. In doubles, Rob van't Ent and Mike Green lost to Brian Brogoit ti and Shane Purcell 7-9 and Jerry Phillips and Joey Baker were downed by Holton and Theis 6-8. Wheat League spring meeting set Morrow County Wheat League president Doug Drake has set the spring meeting date for April 20 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Willows Grange Hall in lone. Items on the agenda in clude election of officers, OSU Extension report by Don Rydrych, Salem/Washington D.C. update, OWGL president Bob Johns’ report, OWGL ex ecutive vice president Scott Hut chinson’s report, and the an nouncement of the 1993 conser vation farm. The meeting is expected to con clude around 9 p.m . Refreshments will be provided. The Wheat League meeting is open to the public and is always looking for new members. There will also be a time for questions. “ I hope you will take this time to come and hear what the league is doing for us here in Morrow County, at the state and national level,” said Drake.
