March 17, 1993 lose to Vikings Fillies lose close game By Fillies Jeremy Maddern to Panthers, end season By Jeremy Maddern The Heppner Fillies’ season came to an end Saturday, March 6 at the Regional Tournament held in LaGrande as they took a hard fought 44-43 loss from the Imbler Panthers. The two teams were playing each other for the final berth in the state 2A girls tournament. The Fillies lost on Friday to the Vale Vikings while the Panthers hammered the Sher man Union Huskies. The Fillies and the Panthers battled through the game as the lead changed eight times. The Fillies’ pressure defense caused some early turnovers in the first quarter as they took a 14-9 lead into the second quarter. The Pan thers regrouped their efforts and began chipping at the Fillies’ lead. The Fillies held tough and were tied with the Panthers after two quarters of play were in the books. The Fillies were having success with their defense as they shut down Imbler’s top gun Lisa Rasmussen, who was held to just six points, all made from the charity stripe, the entire game. Rasmussen had scored 37 against the Sherman Union Huskies the night before. The Fillies came out slow in the third quarter as the Panthers jumped out to an early lead. The Panthers extended their lead to three points heading into the final quarter of play. The Fillies went cold from the field as the Panthers extended their lead. With four minutes left the Panthers enjoyed a seven point lead, behind the ef fort of Gina Porfily as she finish ed the game with 21 points. The Fillies’ offense caught on fire, as they scrapped their way back in to the game. Heppner went on a run that was capped by a Jodi Johnston three pointer. With six seconds left, the Fillies got the ball back and trailed by one. Kelsie Evans, who finished with 15 points, dribbled the length of the floor and managed to get a shot off from the free throw line but it rimmed out and the Imbler Panthers extended their season with a 44-43 victory. Jenny Krein and Sara Greenup each added eight points for the Fillies. The Fillies finished the season with an 18-4 record and will only lose one senior. The Heppner Fillies speed and quickness was not enough as they lost to the taller and stronger Vale Vikings 56-35 in the Regional Tournament held in LaGrande March 5 and 6. The Fillies came out cold and the Vikings racked up five points before the Fillies could get on the score board. The Vikings then went on an 8-0 run to increase their lead to 14-8 after a quarter of play. Things only got worse for the Fillies as they were ice cold from the field but Heppners defensive pressure kept the game from being a blowout. The Vikings slowed the game down and the Fillies trailed by eight points at the half. The third quarter was no different as the Fillies were unable to catch the more powerful Viking team. Michelle Wescot a 6’ senior, lead the Viking attack as she scored a game high 23 points. The Fillies were unable to stay with Vale as the Vikings took a 14 point lead into the final quarter. The Vikings dominated the boards and it showed as the smaller Fillies were out rebound ed 46-23 in the entire game. The Fillies gave a final effort in the fourth quarter as they went on a 5-0 run but their dream of a state School board to interview candidates for superintendent position The Morrow County School Board will interview three can didates for the district superinten dent position on March 17 and 18. Current superintendent Ralph Reed has announced his resigna tion at the end of the school year. Roger D. Rada, currently director of secondary education at Central Valley at Spokane, will be interviewed in executive ses sion March 17. Rada attended Washington State University and received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Eastern Oregon State Col lege in LaGrande. He received a master of science degree in secondary education from EOSC and a Ph.D in education ad ministration from the University of Oregon. Rada taught at Ontario and was an administrative assistant in cur riculum at Reedsport. He was superintendent and principal at Deep Creek and superintendent at North Franklin at Connell, WA. Rada was also a professor at Mustangs season ends with big loss to Vikings By Jeremy Maddern The Heppner Mustangs saw their season end as a result of a 61-42 loss to the Vale Vikings in the Regional Tournament at LaGrande on Friday, March 5. The Vikings advanced to play the W eston-M cEwen TigerScots while the Mustangs went home. The Mustangs came out with intensity, staying with the Vik ings with their up tempo offense in the first quarter. The Vikings jumped out to an early lead but it was soon erased as the Mustangs went on a 12-4 run to lead 19-15 after the first quarter of play. The Vikings then took over as Jeremy Johnson ripped a couple of treys and Larry Ramirez 6’6 ” got some easy inside baskets. The Mustangs were overwhelmed in the second quarter as they were outscored 18-5 and trailed by nine points heading into the half. The third quarter looked as the Mustangs would make a run at the Vale lead but the Vikings built a bigger lead. Heppner cut the lead to 12 points after three quarters of play. Kevin Payne hit the first shot of the quarter as he went on to score seven points, but it didn’t matter as the Vikings were to powerful with their size. Ramirez hit a couple of key lay ins as he scored 19 points and was outmatched only by his teammate Jeremy Johnson, who went on to score 23. Rick Koffler paced the Mustangs with 15. The Mustangs finished the season 16-6 and a second place finish at the District Tournament. The Mustangs suffered key in juries to Tony Burt and Dwayne Dunaway but still finished on a successful note. Sports awards presentations set The lone High and Heppner High School winter sports awards presentations will be Thursday, March 18, at 7 p.m. Both awards presentations will be in their respective high school cafeterias. The word is out about the surprise party at Bud’s Pub. So will you be there? We hope so, because everyone is invited! April 4th 2 p.m. Until ? Your personal snack dish is welcome at our potluck. Don’t forget to pick up your door prize tickets at Bud’s. DANCING—POT LUCK SPECIALS—DOOR PRIZES - Washington State University at Pullman. Two other candidates, Charles D. Starr and Robert J. Pratt, will be interviewed in executive ses sion on Thursday, March 18. Starr’s experience includes 13 years in Morrow County. He was a math teacher at Heppner High School, principal at lone Schools and assistant superintendent for the Morrow County School D istrict. He is currently superintendent at the Central Linn School District at Halsey. Prior to his stint in Morrow County he was a math, physical education and health teacher at West Linn High School. He was also a graduate fellow at the Universi ty of Oregon. Starr attended the University of Oregon and received a bachelor of science degree at Lewis and Clark College at Portland, major ing in physical education, health and math. He received ad ministrator certification from Portland State University and the University of Oregon. Pratt is currently assistant superintendent at Klamath Falls Public Schools. He was superintendent at Libby Public Schools at Libby, Montana and at Buhl Public Schools at Buhl, Idaho. He was assistant principal, administrative assistant summer school teacher, curriculum writer, overseas counselor and teacher at different times at the Boise, Idaho, Public Schools. Pratt attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and received a B.S. in history education at the University of South Dakota. He received an M.A. in school administration from the college of Idaho and an education specialist degree in education administration from the University of Idaho. Pratt receiv ed his Ph.D. in education ad m inistration from Brigham Young University at Provo, Utah. The district board may inter view a fourth candidate at another date. P U B L I C N O TIC E Notice of Supplemental Budget Hearing A public hearing on a propos ed supplemental budget for Mor row County, State of Oregon, for the fiscal year July 1, 1992 to June 30, 1993 will be held at the Morrow County Courthouse. The hearing will take place on March 31, 1993 at 9:00 a.m. in the Mor row County Court Office. The purpose of the supplemental budget is to transfer monies into the newly created County Counsel Department and to create and expenditure line in the Non- Departmental budget. P U B L I C N O T IC E HEPPNER RANGER DISTRICT PROPOSES INSTALLATION OF GATES, GUARDRAIL BARRICADES AND EARTHEN BAR RICADES, AND TRAVEL MANAGEMENT INFORMATION BOARDS AND ROADSIDE BRUSHING The Heppner Ranger District of the Umatilla National Forest is currently conducting an en- viommental analysis for the pro posed installation of gates, guar drail barricades, earthen bar ricades, and information boards. This project would move existing gates, install new gates, install new guardrail and earthen bar ricades, and remove some ex isting earthen barricades as allow ed for in the Motorized Access and Travel Management En vironmental Assessment (MATM EA). It would also install travel management information boards across the district that would display MATM information to forest users. The district is also currently conducting an environmental analysis for the proposed roadside brushing of approximately 35 miles of Forest Road. This pro ject would remove roadside vegetation in order to maintain safe sight distances along several Forest roads on the district. This underbuming project would be designed to re-introduce fire in to the ecosystem which will reduce the buildup of natural and activity fuels on the forest floor while improving the quantity and quality of forage for big game and domestic livestock. This project would result in the underburning of approximately 1,010 acres within the Middle Big Wall and Upper Big Wall subwatersheds.
