Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 3. 1993 Fillies advance to finals with TigerScot win P h o to b y J o y c e H u g h e s Chrisy Schultz wrestles for the ball By Jeremy Maddern The Heppner Fillies advanced to the finals in the District 7-2A Tournament last Friday, Feb. 26 and assured themselves a spot in the Regional Tournament with an impressive win 59-48 win over the Weston-McEwen TigerScots. The TigerScots and Fillies had rumbled in two league games this season with the Fillies getting the best of them with two victories. The TigerScots were not in tim idated as they battled throughout the first quarter with the Fillies as it was dead even. Heppner got into early foul trou ble and head coach Mark Dowdy was forced to sit some of his starters but they still held a one point advantage after a quarter of play, behind the scoring of Kelsie Evans who had eight in the quarter. The TigerScots seemed to get the momentum to swing their way early in the second quarter as they began to establish an early lead while four of the five starters for the Fillies sat on the bench. The bench kept the Fillies close as Weston-McEwen was unable to get any type of offense going, and they played good defense. The TigerScots built a six point lead heading into the half. The third quarter saw the Fillies come out hot, hitting all their jump shots and regaining the lead. The TigerScots were now in foul trouble of their own and the Fillies enjoyed a five point lead going into the final quarter of play. Weston-McEwen took the lead back early in the fourth quarter but then saw it evaporate as Kelsie Evans took control of the game. The TigerScots were unable to handle the pressure from the front court as they com m itted 32 turnovers. The TigerScots never saw the lead again as they began to foul and nraved that the Fillies would miss their free throws. Their prayers were not answered, though as the Fillies headed to victory with a Fillies defeat Sherman 59-48 win. Evans led the Fillies with 23 points, seven steals, and five assists. Jenny Krein and Jodi Johnston also played big roles in the victory as they each had 12 points while Krein also had nine rebounds, eight steals and five assists. Holly Eckman had a solid performance with 11 points and nine boards. Elizabeth Hansell led the TigerScots with 11 points. Lutherans continue Lenten service The Lenten drama continues this week at the Lutheran chur ches. This week “ Simon Peter’’ will reveal some of the reasons for his betrayal of the Savior. Mid-week lenten services at Valby begin with a soup supper at 6 p.m. and worship service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3. Services at Hope begin at 6 p.m. with a soup supper and service at 7 p.m. on Thursday March 4. Hope Church Council will meet after the worship service. Holy Communion will be celebrated at Hope and Valby this Sunday, March 7. Pastor Stan Hoobing will preach on the scrip ture reading from St. John 4: 5-39. His message will be entitl ed “ Finding Ourselves and God’’. Worship services at the Valby Lutheran Church will begin at 9 a.m. An adult Bible class meets before worship ser vice at 8:15 a.m. Worship service and Sunday school at Hope Lutheran Church begins at 11 a.m. Visitors and friends of the con gregations are welcome to attend the services and enjoy coffee and fellowship time during the coffee hour. The Fillies were holding the Huskies to just one shot as they dominated them on the boards as the Huskies had only two offen sive rebounds the entire game. The third quarter saw both teams struggle from the field but Holly Eckman began to take the game over as she finished with 16 points while shooting a blistering 57 percent from the field. Sher man began a little comeback to pull within 11 points after three quarters of play.
