TEN - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 3, 1993 St. Pat’s auction committee still needs items for auction First Interstate funds heart healthy kits for Heppner, lone schools Heppner and lone elementary school children will be among students in 50 classroom s throughout the state who will have the chance to learn healthy habits, thanks to a grant from the First Interstate Bank of Oregon Charitable Foundation to the American Heart Association, Oregon Affiliate. The $1,500 donation will pur chase 50 American Heart Association schoolsite kits for use in grade 4 through 6. The kits will be distributed to several Oregon schools who do not currently have the materials. According to foundation ad ministrator Harleen Katke, “ First Interstate Bank recognizes that the youth of our state are our Ann Spicer with auction items St. Pat’s auction chairperson Ann Spicer shows off some of the items to be auctioned on Satur day, March 13 beginning at 2 p.m. across for the Morrow County Museum. So far the auction list includes Jimmy Farley’s pot of beans; Pendleton car robes, donated by First Interstate Bank; dinner for two at the Pendleton Airport; a $20 gift certificate from Cim- miyotti’s restaurant in Pendleton; season passes to football and basketball games; hand painted saw by Cheri Lovgren; two pounds of Laurie M ark's homemade fudge; school desks; antique bottles and a broom holder from early Heppner businesses donated by Bob Jepsen; a Trivial pursuit game donated by Murray’s Drug; and two back packs donated by Jim and Cork Norene. The committee is still seeking items for the auction, especially gift certificates, furniture, homemade or handcrafted items, antiques and baked goods. Gun club holds final shoot Twenty-one people participated in the trap shoot held at the Mor row County Gun Club last Sun day, Feb. 28. This was the final week of league shooting. First place in the singles' event went to Curt Day with a perfect score of 25. Second place split five ways between Ron Haguewood, Jeff Cutsforth, Loren Woodside. Bill Greenup and Jay Coil all shooting 24 of 25. Curt Day was the leader in the handicap event with a score of 25. Second place was shared by Jeff Cutsforth. Loren Woodside and Pat Lovgren with scores of 22. Jay Coil won the single Annie Oakley event. Sunday, March 7 will be the trophy shoot with 50 singles and 50 handicaps. Shooting will begin at noon. most important asset. We are ex cited about our partnership with the American Heart Association in making its schoolsite program available in many of the Oregon communities we serve.” The kit, “ Getting To Know your Heart, Upper Elementary,” provides curriculum materials on physiology, smoking, nutrition and exercise as well as asser tiveness skills for children as they enter the most temptation-prone years. American Heart Association volunteers will provide inservice training for teachers in how to use the kit. The AHA’s schoolsite program features grade-specific materials for preschool through high school, all geared toward early prevention of heart disease. Dried flowers Garden Club topic “ Don’t be Afraid to Try Dried Flower Arrangements” was the topic presented at the lone Garden Club meeting Feb. 10. Delta Huber gave the program at the home of Lea Mathieu with Birdine Tullis assisting. Delta told the members that all the dried materials she used were gathered along the streams and road in this area. Dried flower arrangements are very suitable for some one who does not wish to care for live flowers. They will also suitable for someone who does not wish to care for live flowers. They will also last as long as needed. She suggested that spraying the materials with hair spray would prevent shattering and to keep the color bright. One thing she cau tioned about was to be careful about spreading weed seeds. The spring sale date was ten tatively set for April 27 at the lone Legion Hall. The group also agreed to help with the Cycle VI in September. Jane Rawlins speaks to Garden Club The Heppner Garden meeting featured a short talk by Jane Rawlins. She spoke on the many implements for use in putting flower arrangements together. Pin holders and how to secure them with sticky tape and fish line were topics. A video was shown on grow ing roses from start to finish courtesy of the American Rose Society. Thank you notes were receiv ed from the Heppner Chamber of Commerce for decorating for the Town and Country dinner and from Leach Garden for a contribution. Ten Blue Spruce trees will be purchased in honor of Arbor Day. Hostesses for the evening were Beulah Ogletree and Verna Brinda. The next meeting will be held on March 1. A potluck will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the meeting to follow. Meeting topic will be xeroscap- ing, which is landscaping with drought resistant plants. Library to present Yeats program Keith Scales “ Daybreak and a Candle End" is the title of a talk to be presented by Portland actor and director Keith Scales on Monday, March 8 at 7 p.m. at the Morrow Coun ty Museum. Scales will discuss the life and works of the early twentieth century Irish poet and playwright William Butler Yeats and their relationship to Irish history. Yeats was a leader in the Irish Literary Revival, a move ment which stimulated a new ap preciation of traditional Irish literature and encouraged new works written in the spirit of a distinctly Irish culture. Scales’ talk will include dramatic readings from Yeats’ poetry and plays as well as infor mation about the author’s life and politics and the contemporary events that shaped them. One of the main themes will be how, in the face of political turmoil, per- sonal disappointment and a belief that the world was about to erupt into a huge cataclysm, Yeats developed an inner calm that allowed him to grow ever more creative and sure of his art. Keith Scales is very quailified to interpret Yeats. In his 20 years in the theater he has performed in or directed productions of Yeats’ “ Cuchulain Cycle,” “ At the Hawk’s Well” and “ The On ly Jealousy of Emer” . He has presented numerous lectures and symposia on Yeats and has published an article on the theater of W.B. Yeats. In 1990 he organized a nine hour reading by 10 actors of Yeats’ collected poetry for a Portland radio station. Scales’ other acting credits in clude major roles in the plays of Harold Pinter, Noel Coward, Samuel Beckett and James Joyce. For two years he has played Scrooge in Charles Dickens’ “ A Christmas Carol.” “ Iam delighted that the library is able to present Mr. Scales’ talk as part of our contribution to Heppner’s St. Patrick’s celebra tion,” says Wendell Buck, the new director of the Oregon Trail Library District. “ I hope that this will be the beginning of a series of programs that will enrich Mor row County’s cultural life.” The program is sponsored by the Oregon Council for the Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The public is invited to attend and there is no admis sion charge. The boys start off action Wednesday at 3 p.m. when they take on St. Paul. The girls first game will be on Thursday when they play Alsea at 7 p.m. The tournament will be held at Baker High School. Van lone firemen burn house for practice The lone Rural Fire Protection District conducted a controlled burning of a structure on 3rd Street in lone on Saturday, Feb. 13. The building has been donated for use as a practice bum. Twenty firemen from the sur rounding area participated in the exercise, one from Lexington and only 29,000 miles Hermiston; six from Heppner and 12 from lone. Five EMTs also participated. Equipment included two lone and one Heppner pumper, one brush rig from lone and Heppner and one tanker and rescue vehicle. The burn began at 9:30 a.m. and went according to plan.
