Oregon 97818 481-9474 481-7351 Dry Eyes: Ten Million Americans Suffer According to a recent issue o f U S Pharmacist, dry eyes is a con dition that affects nearly ten million Americans. W ith dry eyes the quality and quantity o f tears pro duced is inadequate to keep tissues within the eyes healthy. Normal tears consist o f three layers - an exterior fatty layer, a water layer, and an inner mucous layer. Nine out o f ten cases o f dry eyes are due to an inadequate water layer in tears. When dry eyes are caused by an inadequate water la y er. the con dition is referred to as keratocon junctivitis sicca. This type o f dry eyes occurs more frequently among the elderly and women follow in g menopause. Other causes o f dry eyes include a deficiency o f vita min A , eye infections, thyroid dis ease, certain medicines such as iso tretinoin, and eye blinking prob lems such as those that occur with facial paralysis. Treatment o f dry eyes may help reduce the risk o f bacterial infection and possibly blindness. Tearsubsti- tutes (artificial tears) are commonly prescribed for dry eyes. Active in gredients in artificial tears include polyvinyl alcohol, hydroxy-propyl methylcellulose and carhoxymeth- ylcellulose. Persons who frequently use these products should consider preservative-free formulas to help minimize potential allergic reac tions. If tear replacement is not successful, other measures such as medicine-containing ocular inserts or soft contact lens may provide relief o f eye dryness. W ildflow er slides from the col lection o f Janice M erz were shown at the lone Garden Club meeting at the home o f Delta Huber on Jan. 13. Many beautiful pictures o f wildflowers in Oregon have been collected and the slides placed in the lending library o f the Oregon Federation o f Garden Clubs to be used by clubs throughout the state. At the business meeting plans for a reception and tea for Elaine Belts, state president o f the OSFG C were discussed. This will be held at the District #10 meeting at Milton-Freewater in April. The club also voted to send contributions for W orld Garden ing, Willamette Cemetery for landscaping, N ation al L ife Scholarship fund and Leach Gardens.
