Chamber Chatter Sixth graders learn about companies
By Claudia Hughes. Chamber Manager
Sometimes change cannot be
avoided, so we all just have to
look together in the same direc
tion and attempt to re-program
long ingrained habits. This will
be the challenge for Heppner
Chamber members beginning in
December as they move to
Wednesday for the weekly
meetings. The change was re
quested by the Elks, as they will
be closed Tuesdays and open to
members and guests for lunch
Wed. through Friday. The back
room will be renovated for
organization meetings, which is
where the chamber will be
meeting. Start programming

Eastern Oregon grows on you.
Living proof is Gary Marks, alias
Clark Kent, who presented some
very innovative ideas for eastern
Oregon’s future during last Tues
day’s Chamber program. Like
many of us, he feels the small
business person, the rancher,
rural Oregon is not being heard.
His idea is one senator per coun
ty. Think about it, mull it over,
visit with Gary; this idea could
become a reality. It’s time to de
fend the part of our state "that is
home to a special kind of people-
hard working, fiercely indepen
dent, proud of their history and
heritage, tough minded, but com
passionate and caring toward
their neighbors.” Hear more
about this at the annual Town and
Country
M eeting-Eastern
Oregon: The Backbone of the
State, Wednesday, January 13,
1993.

yourself." Anonymous.

talk to "Just Born” candy company president
A typical sixth-grade letter
writing project had an interesting
outcome for five students at
Heppner Middle School. When
learning how to write business
letters, the students wre given a
variety of companies to send their
inquiries and comments. Jared
Eckman, Phillip Traylor, Travis
Winters, Jamie Perez and Kelly
Rafferty all chose to write to the
Just Bom candy company in
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The
Just Born company is most
famous for their “ Hot Tamales”
and “ Mike and Ike” candies.
On Sunday, November 1, Kel
ly Rafferty received a telephone
call from Ross Born, one of the
partners of the company. (Mr.
Bom’s grandfather started the
company in Brooklyn in 1923.)
Bom visited with Kelly for quite
some time and then called her
English teacher Jannie Allen, he
told Allen he was very impress
ed with the letters and the ques
tions the children asked, and that
he would like to have a con
ference call so he would have the

students who wrote to his

On Wednesday, Nov. 4 the
students assembled in school
principal Bryan Traylor’s office
and talked with Born. The
telephone conversation lasted
about 40 minutes and the students
asked many questions ranging
from where the candies are made
to how many children Bom has.
He stressed the importance of
students doing their very best in
school and achieving their goals
through a great deal of hard
work.

Christmas greens
workshop limited
The Heppner Garden Club an
nounces that their annual
Christmas greens workshop will
be limited this year due to a shor
tage of suitable greens in the local
mountains and the shortage of
manpower to either gather greens
or make up the wreaths and
swags for sale.
“ For over 20 years our club
has enjoyed the greens workshop
here, but this year we are asking
for volunteers to help in gather
ing greens wherever we can find
them and in making wreaths and
swags,” said club president Jane
Rawlins.
The greens workshop for the
public at the Artifactory Dec. 5.
will still be offered as in past
years, using whatever materials
can be made available. The final
date to place orders for wreaths
and swags at $15 each will be
November 26. To order call
676-9446.
Anyone wishing to help please
call 676-9435.
INSULATE WATER METERS NOW
This year the water meters will be read during the
winter months, but the meters will need to be in
sulated. Please put the insulation material (foam
pellets, rags, newspaper, etc.) in a small plastic gar
bage bag that can be easily removed or pushed aside.
Be sure that the bag is securely tied or sealed.
♦
I
If you have had frozen pipes in the past, it is advisable
to let a faucet run at a fast drip during extremely cold
weather. Any damages resulting from frozen water
meters that have NOT been insulated will he repaired
at the owner’s expense.
