EiGHT - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, October 7, 1992 Lexington By News Delpha Jones Mustangs keep perfect record 4-0 The Heppner Mustangs kept their league and season record perfect with a 41-6 victory Fri day against the Stanfield Tigers in Stanfield. The game was a mirror image of last week’s game with the Mustangs scoring early and often and the coaching staff giving plenty of action for the entire squad. Only 22 Mustangs were suited for the game. The small numbers has resulted in the cancellation of the balance of the Mustang JV schedule. Heppner scored twice in the first quarter and three times in the second quarter for a commanding 34-0 halftime lead. The teams traded touchdowns in the second half. The Mustangs started fast. After two offside penalties against Stanfield, quarterback Rick Kof- fler faked the pitch on the option, cut up field, and sprinted 55 yards for a touchdown with only 46 seconds gone from the clock. Senior running back Scott Coe scored on a one-yard plunge on the next drive. The big play on the drive was a Koffler to Kevin Payne pass completion for 30 yards. Len Brittner was good on the pat for a 14-0 lead. Brittner was 5-6 on the night with one pat blocked. M eanw hile the Mustang defense was stuffing the Tiger double wing attack with Stanfield going three downs and punt on their first four possessions. Defensive point leader was junior cornerback Jim Tellechea with defensive ends Dwayne Dunaway and Jason Hanna bottling up the potentially potent attack. In the second half tackle Mark Conklin was in on seven tackles and linebacker Ryan Munkers an chored a tough defensive unit. Games like these are made for experimenting and coach Greg Grant opened up the offense with Koffler throwing 18 passes and completing 10 for 124 yards. There was a variety of calls with six different receivers getting into action. The pass protection was excellent with seniors Kevin Kilkenny, Shane Munkers and Ryan Pence along with juniors Joe Lindsay and Dunaway block ing very effectively. Tellechea scored the first of his two running touchdowns with 11:11 remaining in the second quarter. Koffler matched him five minutes later with his second rushing touchdown. Passes to Payne for 20 yards and fullback T.R. Riehl for 18 yards set up the last touchdown BOWLING » » » 0 » 1 7 4 6 5 D im e A Dozen S ep tem b er 20, 1992 6Vi 6 4 4 4 n 3 3 Vi 2 2 4 4 4 4 Vi 6 6 S ep tem b er 28, 1992 wvi IVi 1 K) 2 7 5 7 4 6 6 2 5 7 5 4 8 6 8 Vi 3 Vi 3 B 2 8 Splits converted. In the second half, Tellechea scored from five yards out to complete the Mustang scoring parade. The Tigers put together a monster 18-play scoring drive in the fourth quarter, consuming almost nine minutes before quarterback Ace Huff ran two yards for the score. The pat was blocked making the final score 41-6. Heppner takes a week away from the conference and travels to Harrisburg to face the Har- risburg team Friday at 7 p.m. Harrisburg won several early season games but dropped a 34-0 encouter to crow over the weekend. The Mustangs will stay overnight in the Harrisburg gym before traveling to Corvallis Saturday for a Pac-10 game bet ween the Oregon State Beavers and the 4-0 Washington State iCougars. The Cougars feature all-American candidate quarter back Drew Bledsoe. It should be an exciting and educational trip for the Mustangs. Heppner returns to league play with an October 16 road game against the Pilot Rock Rockets. The Senior Health Focus group met in the senior center dining room on Sept. 30.
