Publishers___ Letters to the Editor Support Peter Fels To the Editor: 1 am writing this letter to urge you to support Judge Peter Fels for election to district court for Umatilla and Morrow counties. As an attorney, 1 am well ac quainted with the qualities that are important in a competent judge. Judge Fels is the candidate who best exemplifies those qualities. Judge Fels was appointed to the position in January, 1992, and since then has done an outstan ding job. He has demonstrated that he has the intelligence, temperament and integrity to understand and apply the law fair ly and correctly. The people of Umatilla and Morrow counties are fortunate to have Judge Fels serving as their judge. Please join me in voting to keep Judge Fels. (s) Patricia Sullivan Pendleton Wallace the choice on Nov. 3 To the Editor: In this November’s election, there is one candidate for district court judge who has the well- rounded experience we need. I'm talking about Jeff Wallace, who is our Morrow County DA. I have known Jeff for the past six years. He has served as Mor row County prosecutor and has also been in private practice. As district attorney, he represents the people of the state of Oregon. As a private attorney with his own law practice, he represented clients in divorces, contracts and other legal matters. He is the on ly candidate who has done pro secution or private practice. In dealing with private clients or crime victims, Jeff has been fair and professional. He knows this area because he has lived most of his life in Eastern Oregon. Jeff Wallace has also been in volved in the community. He helped organize and serves as Cubmaster of the Heppner Cub Scout Pack. He is a captain in the Oregon Naional Guard. He has also given many hours of accor dion and piano music at com munity functions. Jeff Wallace is my choice for district court judge. Please vote for him on November 3. (s) Bob Despain Elect Ann Spicer To the Editor: Voters in Morrow County are fortunate to have a candidate for county judge w ho is experienced in interpretation of the law and legal process. 1 have known Ann Spicer for several years and am confident that Ann will bring pro fessionalism and integrity to the county court. Elect Ann Spicer as Morrow County Judge. The only reason triples have such a good safety record is because they have stricter guidelines to operate than other trucks. Get rid of the triples and put stricter guidelines on all the other trucks. When driving at 55, trucks pass. On the freeway at 60, trucks pass. Hardly ever see any trucks pulled over by the State Police. (The signs say: “ Trucks 55 mph.” ) “ Trucks are safe.” Sure, for the truck drivers, because in ac cidents, it is the automobile driver that is usually killed, not the truck driver. Triples are dangerous to pass, or to be passed by, because they weave, their trailer units do not follow-track-each other in a straight line. Triples are a hazard in the cities. Somebody told me of one incident which happened at Eugene’s West 11th Fred Meyers. The third trailer of a tri ple couldn’t make the comer, and so the trucker had to unhook it, leaving it to block traffic while he took the other two units someplace else to unhook. Then he came back and hooked up the third trailer and finally got it out of the traffic. The “ Thousands of trucks waiting at the border” are triple trailer trucks. The other trucks don’t seem to have any trouble crossing. Vote yes on Ballot 4, ban trip- pies. Trains belong on the tracks Sincerely, (s) Laura Wyant Cheshire Retain North county representation To the Editor: In a county such as Morrow with markedly diverse economies with differing needs within its boundaries, it is vital that all regions be represented on gover ning bodies. Recognition of these varying needs now will protect us from chaos in the future. I have worked with Ed Glenn for five years on three rounds of Regional Strategy programs. I have found working with him that he is fair and knowledgeable. Please continue the 40 year tradition of having a north end representative on the county court, thereby ensuring essential cooperation, good will, and prosperity. (s) Meg Murray Let’s elect Wallace as our next judge To the Editor: Jeff Wallce has my unqualified support for district court judge (Hermiston District Court) in this fall’s general election. His background and experience clear ly make him the top choice for the job. As a DA in a county with it s share of drug problems. Jeff Wallace has worked hard to crack down on methamphetamine and other illegal drug labs. He’s been a member of the Eastern Oregon Drug Task Force. Jeff is a pro secutor who has been going after drug dealers. We need someone with Jeff Wallace’s prosecution experience on the bench. Let’s elect him as our next district judge. (s) Larry Sample Boardman To the Editor: We are writing in support of the re-election of Judge Peter Fels as District Court Judge tor department 2 in the upcoming election. We have between the two of us, approximately 15 years of combined experience working under the leadership of Judge Fels as director of the Pendleton regional office of Oregon Legal Services Corporation. We believe that gives us the insight and knowledge of Judge Fels’ abilities necessary to tell others how we feel about his qualifications for district court judge. Judge Fels, during his employ ment as director of OLS, was honest, fair and courteous to clients, fellow employees and everyone else he came in contact with through his work. He was always there to help other employees during the rough times as well as being there to enjoy with us the good times. Judge Fels was a meticulous worker and pushed himself as hard as was necessry to stay on top of things, especially during difficult times. He was very serious about his work, yet he was able to mix with that a keen sense of humor. Fels has integrity To the Editor: We are writing this letter in support of Judge Peter Fels for the position of Umatilla-Morrow County District Court Judge. We have known Peter Fels for a number of years and have been impressed with his integrity and his leadership skills. Recently Judge Fels has in stituted an educational referral process for defendants who ap pear in his court who have limited basic skills. He is requiring them to attend adult education classes to improve their reading, writing and math skills as part of their probation. His referral process in cludes follow up concerning the attendance and reasonable pro gress of these defendants. This is an innovative and responsible practice and an example of his balanced approach to the judicial system. Peter Fels is doing an outstan ding job as district court judge for Morrow and Umatilla counties. Please vote for him on November 3. Sincerely, , (s) Don and Pat Amsberry Pendleton Hunters Save Your Hides Donate your Deer and Elk Elect Michael Payne To the Editor: The race for state represen tative in District 59 is one of the most important legislative con tests in the state, and it is impor tant that we elect Michael Payne to keep the balance of power in favor of small town rural Oregon. As someone who comes from a farming family. Michael Payne would help balance the votes that are increasingly concentrated around the big cities like Portland. Salem, Eugene and Bend. Senator Brockman, Representatives Pickard and Clarno, and Legislative hopefuls like Marge Garrow and Dennis Luke are concentrated in the Bend area. As director of OLS. Judge Fels was responsible for settling any conflicts which arose in the of fice. He had the uncanny ability to look at every situation from a completely objective point of view and to consider each per son’s feelings and way of think ing in determining how to ap proach a problem. He was, with out fail, always able to come up with a fair solution agreeable to all parties. We believe that the qualities described above more than qualify Peter Fels for the position of district court judge. We belive that he has been able to demonstrate these skills and abilities since his appointment in January. His ability to speak and write Spanish fluently, a qualification desperately needed and rarely found in his position, add to a long list of excellent qualities we feel are irreplaceable in Judge Fels’ current position. We urge you to vote to re-elect Judge Peter Fels as district court judge, department 2, at the November 3 election. Sincerely, (s) Heather Jo Frazell Patricia Minthom Pendleton Our Representative Mike Nelson has done an outstanding job of representing rural con cerns. And Michael Payne, Nelson's past legislative assistant, could continue that tradition. If Mr. Uffleman, who lives only 35 miles from Bend, were elected, the power base would continue to concentrate around the urban centers. Let’s back our favorite son. send Michael Payne to Salem, and give rural Oregonians another voice in the statehouse. Sincerely, (s) Arney L. Main "Where Friends Meet Retain Judge Fels To the Editor: Voters in Umatilla and Morrow Counties will determine who will serve as the Sixth Judicial District Court Judge in the November 3, 1992 election. We would urge you to support the incumbent Judge. Peter Fels. Judge Fels is a man of strong, moral commitment, and has demonstrated an ability to effi ciently administer the court docket. He has been active in community affairs and has pro moted respect for the legal system by personal example. Judge Fels is a hard working, intelligent man, devoted to family, and com mitted to serving the citizens of Umatilla and Morrow Counties. Judge Fels is fluent in spoken and written Spanish, which has been a very useful skill in accom modating a growing Hispanic population in our Sixth Judicial District. We urge you to vote for Judge Peter Fels. Repectfully yours, (s) Betty Lou Holeman (s) Emile M. Holeman Pendleton Fels better qualified To the Editor: I am a lawyer who has practic ed in Umatilla County for over 15 years. I have known Judge Peter Fels for over 10 years. I went to law school with his opponent and have know him professionally since 1976. As an attorney, I advise peo ple every day about important decisions affecting their lives. I must know the law and advise my clients. I depend on the judge to know the law and to apply it equally to all people. I have appeared before Judge Fels in the first month he took of fice. I continue to appear before him regularly. Judge Fels knows the law and he is fair. He is better qualified than his opponent. Please vote for Judge Peter Fels.
