Anne, 55, is a native of Salem, where her dad and mother were avid golfers. Her dad, John Heltzel, was an attorney and one of the founders of the Illahe Hills Golf and Country Club. Bob, 61, is a graduate of Pur due University and retired to the “ Red Rock” country of Sedona two years ago. He had an ad ministrative position with the U.S. Navy in research and development and was a key man in the field of radar and electronic warfare. Anne graduated from the University of Oregon and met Bob on a blind date while visiting her uncle Chuck Heltzel, a former public utilities commis sioner for O regon, in Washington, D.C. A nne’s m other, the late Margaret Barratt Heltzel, was bom in Heppner in 1909 to William B. and Eliza Barratt. She was the younger sister to Garnet Barratt, former Heppner rancher and county judge. She moved to Portland with her father and mother in 1926 and graduated from Grant High School and from the University of Oregon in 1930. While in Heppner, the Abergs said they were thrilled with the Morrow County Museum. “ It gives us a valuable insight how our ancestors (the Barratts) lived in those early days,” says Bob Aberg. Both were impressed by the scope of materials presented, especially on the Heppner flood. With Floyd Jones of Heppner and her cousin Jim Barratt of Corvallis as guides, the Abergs drove 12 miles out of town to visit the former Sand Hollow Ranch where the Barratts lived. The William Barratt family narrowly escaped the Heppner flood as they had moved back to Sand Hollow to put up the hay. Their Heppner home that was destroyed by the flood stood at the location of the current Sweeney Mortuary. The Barratts rebuilt on the same site and Margaret Barratt lived at that location. Anne Aberg has received a lot of background material from cor respondence with Ruth McCabe of the Morrow County Historical Society, of which she is a member. As a local sidelight, the Abergs are Episcopalians in Sedona and their rector is Father Kerrie Newhardt, who lived in Montana with Bishop Jackson Gilliam, a native of Heppner. Anne would like anyone who remembers her mother to share with her by mail at her home ad dress: 25 Sitgreaves Ct..
