The purpose of those permits is to alleviate unnecessary hardship created by strict enforce ment of the city 's zoning ordinances. On November 4, during a public hearing, the planning com mission granted a temporary use permit to Walter Foster, for a temporary residence in his motor home. The purpose of the permit was to allow Mr. Foster and his family time to find adequate housing while starting their new business at the bowling alley. The permit was issued for a six month time period ending June 1. The planning commission is a seven member volunteer board w hich meets on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. At our meetings the commission hears requests for conditional use per mits, variances, and temporary use permits during public hear ings. The planning commission also implements changes in the city’s zoning ordinances impos ed by Oregon law. The commis sion would like to invite the public to attend any or our meetings and encourages com ments on how we can better serve the residents of Heppner. Planning Commission Chairman (s) Cyde Estes Enjoy holiday w ithout alcohol To the Editor: This three day weekend is a time to stop and remember lov ed ones who have passed on from this temporal life, especially those who died fighting for the freedoms that we enjoy. Let us not use this as an oppor tunity to abuse ourselves with chemical substances, or alcohol. Let us especially warn our under age youth of the dangers and harm from chemical substances and alcohol. The National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependency says “ Alcohol is closely linked with virtually every negative aspect of society; suicide, violent crime, birth defects, industrial ac cidents, domestic and sexual abuse, homelessness, death and disease. It is the number one drug problem for people from all walks of life. It knows no racial, ethnic, economic or social barriers. And just one more piece of in formation from 1990 College Drinking Focus Group Reports: “ Drinking is often less expensive than other forms of entertain ment. A six pack of beer is $3.50; a rock concert is $20; music CD is $14 and a movie is $6.“ Let us encourage our youth to enjoy this holiday in non alcoholic ways and to a safe and sane weekend. The money is specifically ear marked to pay the secretary of the Chamber of Commerce’s salary. Sometime in July we will be circulating an initiative to am- mend the city charter to ensure voter approval of taxation. We will be calling you again at this time for your generous support. Thanks again. Sincerely, (s) Thomas LaRusso Dolores Cooper To the Editor: We would like to express our appreciation to all the courageous people who signed the referen dum to make it possible for all of us to vote on the Transient Room Tax in the November election. Since there seems to be some confusion as to how this money will be used we would like to be perfectly clear as to where it will go. Some of us are under the er roneous belief that the money will be used for community projects. Profile corrected To the Editor: I would like to correct an item in my candidates profile printed in last weeks Gazette-Times. This error was probably caused by a confiision in initials of the various organizations. I was never a member of the executive commit- tee of the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association. I was on the ex ecutive committee of the Associa- tion o f Oregon Counties representing the North Central Eastern Oregon Counties until 1987. (s) Don McElligott lone T hanks for beauty in H eppner To the Editor: On a recent trip to Heppner I went around a block to turn around and noticed some very pretty flowers so continued on the back street and turned onto other streets and tried to take in all the streets in town. Some very beautiful flowers with purple lilacs and iris galore. Some of the houses were older but nearly all had well kept lawns and flowers and houses well maintained with some having unusual lawn decorations. Really enjoyed my self guided tour and wish to thank the people of Heppner for the beauty I saw that day as I drove around. Again, thank you citizens.
