March 25, 1992 FFA to auction off students as slaves Sportsman’s show March 27-29 The variety of participants in the 7th annual Eastern Oregon Sportsman’s Show in Pendleton is better than ever: tents, fishing and hunting guides, tackle, tax idermy, packing and leather goods, bugles, archery.. .and the list goes on. This year’s event takes place Friday through Sunday March 27- 29 at the Pendleton Conven tion Center. Friday begins at noon and lasts until 9 p.m. Satur day hours will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The elk bugling contest is always a big draw with people coming from all over the region to par ticipate or cheer on their favorites. Last year Gary Edwards of Pendleton was the winner, with Joch Kloer of Oregon City second and Jeff Beers of Pendleton third. Casey Hunt won the youth divi sion with Joe Cunha, second, both of Pendleton. The bugling contest will be Saturday evening. Admission for the show is $3 for adults and $2 for students and seniors per day. Seminars are free with admission. Doing your own P h o to b y J o y c e H u g h e s guided trip to Alaska is a seminar Friday. Collecting antique fishing tackle will be one of the seminars on Saturday. People are invited to bring their antique fishing gear and let Hobart Manns value it for them. The Oregon State Police will do a seminar on “ Catching poachers with decoys” and will show tapes of the culprits caught. Cooking and smoking seminars are also popular and will take place all day Saturday and Sun day. Roger Neufeldt from Luhr Jensen will be doing a seminar on making sausage and smoking it on Saturday evening with a fish smoking seminar to follow on Sunday morning at 10:30. New this year is Packing with Mules, Saturday morning at 9:30. Vickie Leonard and Dr. John Groupe will show what, where and how to pack and then go out side and prepare the animals. Anyone wishing to participate is welcome to do so. The Rocky Mountain Antler Museum will again be at the show with a display of 28 mounts. Many state records are included including the world record ar chery typical deer. Roger Seiner is willing to rough judge scoring on horns if people bring them to the show. There is a $1 fee for this part. KUMA Radio in Pendleton sponsors the annual show with Greg Smith in charge. “ We are inviting individuals clean to clean out their unneeded fishing gear, camping gear, used guns, etc and bring them to the show and rent a table for $25 for the three days or $15 a day to sell their items. Make a little money yourself at the show,” comments Smith. The grand door prize again this year is a North Idaho all-expense paid elk hunting trip. It’s spon sored by C oors Beer and G raybeal D istributing of Pendleton. Jim Bosworth was the recipient of the prize last year, compliments of his wife Patsy. F F A A d v a n c e d s tu d y c la s s g e t r e a d y to b e a u c tio n e d o ff a s s la v e s The annual FFA Slave Auction will be held Thursday, April 2 in the H eppner High School cafeteria at 7 p.m. Around 35 slaves will be auctioned for eight hours of work each. “ This is the time to get done all those ‘maybe later’ things you have been putting off. Clean the yard, clean the basement, paint the fence, wash all the windows, clean the bam. etc. Let the FFA take the worry and the work out of it for you,” said FFA teacher Bill Umbarger. ‘Brawny’ Brody Struckm eier, ‘T ry in ’ Ryan Munkers and ‘No Pain’ Dwayne Dunaway, are a few people to be auctioned off to take care of your jobs. The money from the auction helps offset FFA Chapter ex penses for trips, contests and conventions. Free coffee and donuts will be available along with door prizes. Friends of OSU golf gala set Morrow County Extension Of fice of Oregon State University and the E.R. Jackman Foundation invite all friends of OSU - parents, volunteers, or alums to attend the Golf & Gala Dinner on Wednesday, May 13. The ‘91 fun golf tournament will be repeated at Willow Creek Country Club. Prizes will be awarded to both men and women for net and gross scores. The cost is $2 for country club members and $10 for non members. The tournament starts at 1 p.m. The evening dinner will begin at Heppner Elks Club with a nohost social hour at 5:30 p.m. A Prime Rib dinner will follow at 6:30 p.m. The program will in clude com ments from Dr. Michael Mailen, professor of agricultural and resource economics at OSU. There will also be brief remarks from Betty Brose, director of development, E.R . Jackman Foundation. Harold Kerr will be present to renew acquaintance with friends. Mid-week Lenten services continue The theme for the mid-week Lenten services at the Lutheran churches this week will be “ The Body of Christ” . Service will be held at Valby, located on the Ione-G ooseberry road on Wednesday and at Hope in Hepp ner on Thursday. A soup-bread supper will begin at 6 p.m. with the worship service at 7 p.m. Pastor Stan Hoobings message will be based on reading of St. Marck 7:31-37 “ The Ears of Christ” . Sunday, March 29 adult Bible study begins at 8:15 a.m. at Valby Lutheran Church. The = class will be studying the Old Testament book of Esther. Wor ship service will follow at 9 a.m. Sunday school at Hope in Hepp ner starts at 9:30 a.m. with wor ship service at 11 a.m. Pastor H oobing’s w orship service message will be entitled “ The Foolishness of the Cross” based on scripture reading of I Corin thians 1:18-31. Cost for the dinner is $5 for adults, $2.50 for children under 12 and $15 for a family. Pinochle will be $2. This is a money making project to help support the work of the grange which continually con tributes to many community activities. Little League sign ups slated Little League sign ups will be held Wednesday, April 1 from 7-8 p.m. at the lone school cafeteria for all lone youth in terested in playing on an lone ma jor, minor or T-ball team. Sign ups for those interested in the Heppner and Lexington areas will be Wednesday, April 1 and Thursday, April 2 at the Bank of Eastern Oregon Heppner branch from 5-7 p.m. Sign up fee for those playing on a Heppner team will be $20 per child. Anyone that wishes to play on a team, majors, minor or T-ball, is encouraged to sign up at this tim e. Little League tryouts will be April 4 and 11 in lone and Hepp ner. All 11 and 12 year olds are urged to bring a copy of their birth certificate at the time of registration. This is to avoid hav ing to obtain a copy before all stars. Minor and T-ball tryouts will be held towards the end of April.
