Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 4, 1992 - FIVE Fillies open tournament with big win Fillies play well but come up short for league championship title Pendleton. The Fillies defense was truly awesome in the opening period of play as they jumped out to an ear ly 12-4 lead heading into the se cond quarter of play. The Fillies started to slump a bit in the se cond quarter as the Rockets pull ed within six points at the half. The Fillies opened up the third quarter with a 12-2 run to put the Rockets away. Sparked by the play of Jodi Johnston who had two three-pointers, the Fillies' starters earned a rest in the fourth period as head coach Mark Dowdy brought out his reserves. The Fillies cruised to a 20-point win. Holly Eckman led the Fillies with 14 and Heather Eckman added 13. The Fillies’ defense was unbelievable as they had 18 steals and held the Rockets to 29 percent field goal percentage in the game. The win pitted the Fillies against the Weston- McEwen Tiger Scots in the championship game. By Jeremy Maddern The Heppner Fillies played in spired basketball against the Weston-McEwen Tiger Scots in the 7-2A championship game Saturday but came up short, 39-46. The loss put the Fillies go ing into regional tournament play as the number two seed. The Tiger Scots had beaten up on the Fillies twice earlier in the season but got all they could han dle. Heppner kept even with the very powerful Tiger Scots in the first quarter and more important ly, gave the young Filly team some confidence. The Fillies held a 22-18 lead with about three minutes left in the second quarter but collapsed under tough Tiger Scot defense. The Fillies got slop py with their passes which led to three break away lay-ins. The Tiger Scots jumped to a five-point lead going into the halftime festivities. With the win the Fillies ad vanced to the championship game and assured a spot in the upcom ing regional tournament held this weekend March 6 and 7 in The Heppner Fillies head to the Regional 2A Tournament this Friday and Saturday March 6 and 7 in Pendleton held at the Con vention Center as the number two seed. The Regional Tournament will begin with a 1:30 p.m. game pit ting the Fillies ( 14-8) against Vale Vikings (20-2) from the Wapiti League. Wasco County Redsides will follow the girls at 3 p.m. Weston-McEwen, (22-0) CBC’s league champion will take on the Wapiti League champion (18-4) Imbler Panthers at 7 p.m. Weston-McEwen boys will play at 8:30 p.m. never regrouped and went ice cold in the second half. For tunately their defense was keep ing the Tiger Scots lead at bay and cut it to four before the fourth and final period of play. The Fillies then saw Weston-McEwen build a nine point lead early in the fourth quarter and could not come back. The Fillies lost by a seven point margin. The Fillies worst enemy was St. Pat’s parade to include special kids pets division * Plans are well underway for this year’s St. Patrick’s Parade. Entries are already coming in and include a number of musical en tries according to parade commit tee members. Again this year there will be a special division for kids, children 12 and under and their pets. Rib bons and cash prizes will be awarded for a number of categories including the best Irish dressed pet, the best mannered pet, the best kid/pet outfit, the pet with the best trick and many others. Any kids or pets interested in The Heppner Mustangs season came to a screeching halt last Fri day night, Feb. 28 at the District Tournament. The Mustangs, in a must-win situation, could not pull it out as they lost to the Wasco County Redsides, 65-58. The first quarter saw both THE NEW OWNERS OF AH) teams stumble a bit, but the Red sides took an early five point lead in to the second quarter. Bill Williams topped all scorers with a perfect score of 25. Second place was shared by Pat Lovgren. Mike Adams and Sherron Woodside shooting 24 of 25. Kelwayne Haguewood and Jay Coil split the handicap event shooting 23 out of 25. Second place went to Jeff Cutsforth and Dick Allen with scores of 22. The club will open Sunday, March 8, at 10 a.m. to begin the trophy shoot. Each shooter will be classed according to his or her eight-w eek average in the telephonic shoot. These classes will then compete in two events: the 50 singles and the 50 handicap targets. Trophies will be award ed to the winners in each class. The Mustangs could not stop the senior combination of Scott Lacy and Scott Gamer who combined for 43 points. The Mustangs were lagging behind in the third period but thanks to a couple of Richard Pet tyjohn treys the Mustangs were within reach of the lead going into the fourth quarter. Heppner fought hard but traded baskets with the Redsides the whole period and could not overcome the lead. Wasco outscored the Mustangs by two in the last period of play and won 65-58. The parade is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, March 14, right after the bed race. Parade entries will need to start checking in between noon and 12:30.
