Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 4, 1992 - THREE Tournament All-Stars named Forest Service Dance team takes first place at District recruits youth for jobs Gabe Garcia, Mike Garrett, Deacon Halvorsen and David Wagenblast Heideman, Ryan By Anne Morter lone High School brought home several individual and team honors from the recent Big Sky Basketball Tournament held in Umatilla. For the boys, Mike Garrett and Gabe Garcia were named to the first team all-district. David Wagenblast, Ryan Halvorsen and Deacon Heideman were honorable mention. Kari Morgan was named to the first team all-district girls, Nan cy Morter to the second and Janie Cupps was honorable mention. Seven young people between the ages of 15 and 18 are being recruited by the Umatilla Na tional Forest for summer work in the Youth Conservation Corps. The work will include clerical duties, campground and trail maintenance. Four field going positions will be located in Hepp ner and two in Pomeroy, WA. One clerical position will be located in Pendleton. The program will last eight weeks from approximately June 15 to August 7 and pay the minimum wage of $4.75 per hour in Oregon and $4.25 in Washington. Applications will be accepted from March 2 through April 15. Participants will be selected no later than May 15. The applicants will be selected at random. No previous ex perience is required. Applicants must have a social security number, or have made applica tion to obtain one. Applicants must also obtain parental or legal guardian consent to enroll in the program. The Heppner High School dance team brought home the first place trophy for halftime enter tainment during the District 2A tournament held in Pendleton. The award, a little late in com ing was well deserved as they performed an outstanding dance routine. Garden Bugs elect officers The regular meeting of the Lexington Garden Bugs was held Feb. 4 at the home of Delta Huber. Present besides the hostess were Annetta Padberg, Kathy Tellechea, Phyllis Ander son, Marg Ball, Frances Murty, Lois Allyn and guest Jane Rawlins. Guest speaker for the evening was Bill Rawlins, who presented a very interesting talk on grow ing dahlias. Some of the points he mentioned were “ smaller tubers actually work better.” Huge size tubers allow a plant to draw nourishment from the tuber, rather than developing a really good root system. Tubers are planted on their sides. Dahlias need well drained soil and protec tion from the wind. Thrips and aphids are the main insect pro blems. Tubers have to be dug up in the fall before freezing weather, washed after being dug and stored in a cool, dry place. Dahlias can be all the way from small, single flowers to huge 17” blooms with many and varied shape petals and colors. “ It was a special pleasure to have Mr. and Mrs. Rawlins with us,” said a spokesperson. Election of officers for the com- ing year was held. Delta Huber was elected chairman; Lois Allyn vice-chairman; Kathy Tellechea, secretary. lone wins sportsmanship award By Anne Morter The lone boys won the District 1A Tournament sportsmanship award held in Umatilla last weekend Feb. 21 and 22. The award is voted on by the referees and representatives from the sponsoring Umatilla Booster Club. lone tied with Sherman Coun ty for the Big Sky Sportsmanship Banner. After each game, the of- ficials rated the crowd, coaches and players on overall sportsmanship. lone also won the Pat Gillette Memorial Scholarship plaque, awarded by the Blue Mountain Officials Association. The of ficials rate sportsmanship in all the Columbia Basin schools for this award. Linsey Ropp sold the most tickets in grades five through eight selling over 220 tickets. For her efforts she received a handmade jewelry box donated and made by Robert Reid of Heppner. Robert also made and donated the hope chest won by Wayne Davis. Cheryle Lightle won the tune-up from Skaggs Auto and Kathy Tellechea won the $100 gift cer tificate donated by Morrow County Grain Growers.
