The Heppner Fillies had a
rematch with Weston-McEwen
Tiger Scots Friday night, Feb.
14, in Athena and were out to
avenge an earlier loss but got
hammered, losing 72-39.
The Fillies played an almost
perfect first quarter and were
frustrating the mighty Tiger Scots
taking an early two point lead.
The Tiger Scots regrouped and
started to take control of the
game. The Fillies were beginn
ing to lose their composure and
they committed 11 turnovers in
the second quarter. The Tiger
halftime. The Fillies could not
stay close and the game turned in
to a blowout. With an over
whelming press the Tiger Scots
began to trounce on the Fillies.
Colby Cummings led the charge
with 24 points. The Fillies were
down 53-29 going into the fourth
quarter but they were not out.
The Fillies managed to hit a cou
ple of three pointers but that
didn’t matter as they lost big
time. The Fillies played with
heart but met up with a superior
team. Jodi Johnston led the Fillies
with 10 points.
Cards lose to Dufur,
still number one
The Oregon State University
Extension Service is currently ac
cepting applications for their
19*J2 NE Oregon Lambing
School, according to OSU Exten
sion agents Bill Broderick and
Randy Mills. The lambing school
is scheduled for February 20 and
21 at the Krebs Ranch near Cecil.
It provides participants with a one
day intensive “ hands on” learn
ing experience.
Instructors for the school in
clude Dr. Don Hansen, OSU Ex
tension veterinarian; Dr. Jim
Thompson, OSU Extension sheep
specialist; Bill Broderick, OSU-
Morrow County livestock agent;
Randy Mills, OSU-Umatilla
County livestock agent; and the
Krebs Ranch lambing crew. Us
ing a large scale commercial
sheep operation as the classroom
lambing school participants learn
nutrition,
animal health,
obstetrics and other management
practices that maximize baby
lamb survival. Because of the
large number of lambs bom each
day, the school provides as many
learning situations daily as most
farm flock operators would ex
perience in many years with their
own operations.
Enrollment is limited to eight
participants per day and reserva
tions are accepted on a first come,
first serve basis. The $10
registration fee includes the one
day school and a lambing school
notebook that contains many
useful references. To register for
the school contact Bill Broderick,

Agent, 676-9642 or Randy Mills,

from the East Division. The
Cards played two games last
weekend, overwhelming Helix
Friday evening and losing to
Dufur on the road Saturday.
While it made speculating about
the District Tournament a bit
more interesting, the places were
already set before the game
began.
On Friday, Feb. 14, it was
lone’s game from the get-go as
they downed Helix 92-63. The
fired-up Cards jumped out to a
24-10 first quarter lead. The four
seniors on the team, Mike Gar
rett, Gabe Garcia, Eric Orem and
Brent Sheirbon, started their final
home game and came out swing
ing. By halftime, the Cardinals
led 53-29, and continued to roll,
winning, 92-63.
Gabe Garcia led the scoring at
tack with 22 points followed by
Mike Garrett with 20 and Tony
Bjerke with 15. The Cards
dominated the boards, 45-26,
with Aaron Heideman leading the
way with 11 rebounds. David
Wagenblast dished out a whopp-

The Cards encountered the
Dufur Rangers Saturday, Feb. 15
on the Dufur home court. This
was a team that matched up close
ly with them. Dufur got the ear
ly jump on the Cards and held it
for most of the game as lone had
trouble finding its mark. Coach
Del LaRue called it “ a game of
spurts” noting that the Rangers
would build a lead and then the
Cards would make a run at them.
In the end though, it was the
Rangers with the final punch as
they won the game, 73-69.
Mike Garrett was the game's
high scorer with 23 points,
followed by Gabe Garcia with 15,
had 11 rebounds in the game and
Garcia had nine assists in the
match.
