Benjamin Christmas! Just the word brings excitement and joy to the faces of little ones. What does the word “ Christmas” mean to you? There are two terms that I like very much. They are, “ Jesus is the Reason for the Season” and “ Wise Men Still Seek Him” . Without the birth of a very special baby, we wouldn’t celebrate Christmas. We may have the commercialism of the season, but it wouldn’t mean anything more than any other day off from work or school. The wise men came to find this special baby. They traveled a long way just to see Him and give Him the gifts they brought. By following the star, they eventually found Him. The Lord still has ways of bringing people to Himself. One way is through the Holy Bible. It is a map of how we can find the Christ, and have Him become our personal Savior. Another way is through our churches. Our community is blessed with several churches and the people in them would be very willing to help someone find their way to the Savior. As we celebrate Christmas with our family and friends, let’s not forget that “ Jesus is the Reason for the Season” and the fact that “ Wise Men Still Seek Him” . Christmas Message Heppner United Methodist Church The Rev. Gerry Etchison The Christmas season is an exciting time of year. As we put up a tree and decorate it, then we begin to shop for presents with those who are dear and important to us in mind. It is a time to share the caring, the love we have for each other as family and friends. It is also a time to experience the caring, and love that God has for each of us. On Christmas Day we celebrate the birth of the Christ child. Jesus Christ: the incarnation of God comes down to us at Christmas time. It is also a reminder that God working through Jesus Christ is a part of our lives each and every day, of each and every year. I believe that as we gather for Christmas this year, we should enjoy the excitement, we should enjoy being with those who are dear to us, and we should also celebrate the ultimate witness of God’s love for us. Stan Hoobing ' The other day a small child asked me, “ What do you want for Christmas, Pastor?” After giving that question a lot of thought, I am now willing to share my list. I want to know, love, and care for the homeless, the bat tered, abused and unemployed members of our society; I want to share and care for the countless numbers of hungry people in our world; I want to grow in appreciation of the environment and the wonderful creatures God has created in the world; I want to know and love the members of my family as they have come to know and love me; I want to travel to Bethlehem and humbly kneel at the manger of the Christ child who is the Word of God made flesh, full of truth and grace; I want my thoughts to become known to you, so that these wants may be yours as well; and lastly, I want to wish to all the wonderful people of Mor row County a very blessed Christmas Season and New Year full of joy, hope and peace. “ For unto you is bom this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” And this is truly good news of great Joy. Spiritual Gifts St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Fr. Gerry Condon Important Because Imported First Christian Church Pastor Roger Scharen The physician was going to operate on a very wealthy man who always wanted the very best of everything. The doctor said that it was a routine operation and that they could even use a local anesthetic. The millionaire was irate, “ Don’t use a local, get something imported.” That is what Jesus is - “ something imported.” or someone imported. A hymn puts it this way: “ There was no other good enough to pay the price of sin; He only could unlock the gate to heaven and let us in.” His birth was miraculous, the only one of its kind in history. It was prophesied in Isaiah 7:14 seven hundred years before it happened. But even more startling is John’s declaration, “ The Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the W orld.” That meant only one thing - Jesus was born to die. The virgin birth of Jesus gave to us a divine Redeemer whose life became a ranson for sin. A Jesus bom in sin or subsequently guilty of sin could not have atoned for sin. Pro Rodeo finals in Yakima The Columbia River ProRodeo Circuit Finals will be held in the Sundome, at Yakima, WA, January 3 to 5. The Friday and Saturday night performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. and there will be a Sunday matinee beginning at 2 p.m. The top 12 cowboys and cowgirls in each event will par ticipate. Local cowboys and cowgirls who qualify for the rodeo are: Ron, Tony and Steve Currin, Kelli Fletcher Currin, Randy Britt, Joan Healy Hays, Tiny Bertsch, Butch Knowles. Dave Cannon, Shane Crossley, Mike Beers, David Bothum and Tom Camarillo. Advance tickets are available by calling (509) 453-7139. Ticket prices are $9, $12 and $14.50. The rodeo headquarters will be at Cavanaugh’s (formerly Town Plaza), 607 E. Yakima Ave., Room reservations may be made in advance and guaranteed by bankcard or check. The Columbia River Circuit Finals will hold a luncheon and fashion show on Saturday, January 4, at Cavanaugh’s at Yakima Center at 11:30 a m. Cost is $10 per person. It may be that all of us are imbued with the idea of gift giving. Certainly, gift giving is a wonderful manifestation of the spirit of Christmas. However, it is easy for us to go to a store and buy a toy train, a bottle of perfume, or a basket of flowers, or whatever. Much more difficult would be the giving of spiritual gifts, which would also be much more precious. How much more joyous would Christmas be if spouses were to give to each other,and to their children, the gift of UNDERSTANDING? Or if all of us were to give to each other the gift of WISDOM - first learning the wisdom of the Bible, and then using it to guide our lives, and inspiring others to do likewise? How great would be the gift of COURAGE - if we had it in our hearts to realistically face our problems and deal with them? What a wonderful gift the SPIRIT OF PRAYER would be. How effectively that could transform our families. It would make our homes places of cheerfulness, peace and joy. If, this Christmas, we give these gifts there will be a song of praise on our lips and joy in our hearts.
