Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 18, 1991 - FIVE Justice Court Report Ethiopian faith minister visits Heppner Almaz Fisseha of Ethiopia, can now count Heppner as one of the many places she has visited since becoming a full-tim e faith minister. Fisseha was bom in Addis Ababa, the capitol city of Ethiopia, where her parents still live. In January she plans on returning for a visit there as well as to other countries, she said. “ I’ve had the opportunity to meet God’s children all over the w orld,” Fisseha said. And though she now calls Seattle home base, she continues to travel abroad as well as in the United States and Canada. It took a great deal of faith and prayers to survive in Ethiopia under communist oppression dur ing her youth, she said. Although the country is one of the world’s oldest C hristian countries, Fisseha said that during that time religious observations had to be held underground. Because of that oppression, Fisseha applied for schooling in the United States. She had already completed pre-medicine courses with the intent of becom ing a doctor. She was admitted at Sterling College, Sterling, Kansas, at age 17. Following graduation, she worked full-time as a chemist in California for about five years. Alm az Fisseha because she was not a United States citizen, it would not be possible to complete her medical degree. So she changed her career to that of a chemist. She received her master’s degree at the University of California in Berkeley. But to finance her education, she had to work many long hours at dif ferent jobs between classes and “ I always felt the calling to share Jesus’s love,” Fisseha said. And when she became partially paralyzed, she said she told the Lord that if she became well again, she would do whatever He wanted her to do. “ It’s the Lord who helps me to speak to others,” she said, because she was basically a shy person. She said that the Lord always provides a way for her to meet the expenses of her travels, but she prefers to stay in people’s homes so that she can get to know them better. She met Heppner host, Ruby Steers, when they both attended a religious conference in Seattle this past June. Along with others, they traveled together to Califor nia as witnesses, she said. This led to the invitation to visit Heppner.
