October 23, IWl lone Cardinals wins ‘A ’ volleyball Tournament Concert, stew feed sold out By Becky Wagenblast The lone Middle School Lady Cardinals beat the Umatilla Vikings on Thursday. Oct. 17 in a volleyball m a tc h . The first game lone beat the Vik ings 15-7. Melissa McElligott had two scoring streaks to total 10 points. The second game of the match lone won 15-11. Marie Tworek was high scorer with five points. lone played the three hits set-up well to finish the game. On Saturday, Oct. 19, the lone Middle School Lady Cardinals traveled to Stanfield to play in the “ A” volleyball tournament lone won the tournament last year and was looking for another win this year. In the first game lone went up against the Heppner Ponies whom they had previously beaten. Becky Wagenblast served 11 straight points to help stop the Ponies, lone beat Heppner 15-1. The second game proved to be more difficult as the relaxed Car dinals let the Ponies edge into a 15-13 win for the cards. Melissa McElligott had some very hard serves to tie up the game. In the semi-finals lone met up with Athena. lone had no problem getting a victory with a sweep 15-0. Marie Tworek served seven consecutive points. In game two, lone girls had several points served by Kara Miller. In the championship game lone met up with Echo the only other small school in the tournament. lone had a bad first game and lost 8-15. McElligott served up six bought in 1946. Crum is a native of Gilliam Coun ty where he started farming in 1943 at Blalock and Mikkalo. The tailgate party will be held outside, weather permitting. Besides chili for $1.50. the menu includes baked potato-$l .50; chili and baked potato com bo-$2; brownie 50C, pop 75C and coffee 25C. Hunting dog deaths caused by algae At least five hunting dogs have died in eastern Oregon after consum ing water containing large amounts of a deadly algae concentrated by drought and low water, according to an Ontario wildlife biologist. “ The dogs apparently drank fromm water covered with an algae bloom called Anabaena, a genus of blue-green algae,” says Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist Perren Baker. The algae appears as a greenish scum in warm, shallow, oxygen-deficient waters in shallow coves in and around reser voirs and cattle pounds, says Baker.
