Condon won the hard- fought, see saw match 15-10, 15-17, 15-10 in front of a large crow d at the lone gym. In the first game, the Cards dug themselves a 0-6 hole but climbed out to take the lead at 7-6 and then again at 9-7. At that point, they seemed to lose their momentum while Condon sent a girl to the serve line who served out the game for them. The second game was another close one. Condon seemingly had the edge when they lead 14-12, their first of two game point attempts, lone tied it up at 14 and it was then that coach Greg Likens knew they would win that game. “ The girls have not lost a game this year that went into extra points.’’ said Likens members, with Marsha Sweek tell ing of some of the happenings of the Morrow County Museum. Four directors whose terms were up were re-elected for four year terms They were Jerry Peck, Barabara Bloodsworth, Barton Clark and Pat Sweeney. The Eppenbach family from Ir- rigon and Umatilla and Gospel singers from the Baptist church in Ir- rigon sang several songs. Joyce Badgley Smith of Baker Ci ty was the main program of the after noon. She created a character nam ed ‘Fanny’ a composite of individual pioneer women, with true stories taken from diaries of Pioneer Women. ‘Fanny’ was dressed in clothing worn by her grandmother when she crossed the plains to Oregon. The meeting ended with the group singing “ God Be With You Til We Meet Again.” The dinner commit tee. the Chronicles committee, the speaker, vocalist and all who helped in any way during the past year received recognition from the president. In the Service And the lady Cardinals didn’t break their string, nipping Condon by the required two points. The start of the third game look ed good for the Cards when they opened up a 4-1 lead, but then the emotional edge from game two slip ped from their grasp and Condon got back into the game. While the lady Cards struggled, Condon went on to take the match. “ Overall the girls played pretty well. I expected them to win but they didn’t quite get the job done.’’ said Likens. Statistically speaking several in dividuals had good games. Amy Pointer was 14 of 16 hitting with four kills and also served 100 per cent. Janie Cupps made 13 points on 17 of 19 serving while Nancy Morter was nine for 12 in hitting with four kills. She was also 12 for 12 at the serve line. The lone JV team lost their match 15-13, 15-7, 15-5. The Cards had one other game last week, played on Tuesday Oct. 8 at Arlington. Coach Likens reported that the girls played loose and actual ly had fun on the court, one of the first times this year. lone won the match 15-4. 15-6. Army National Guard Private 1st Class Timothy J. Fuzi has com pleted training at the U S. Army In fantry School, Fort Benning, Col umbus, GA. During the course, students received training which qualified them as light-weapons infantrymen and as indirect-fire crewmen in a ri fle or mortar squad. Instruction included weapons qualifications, tactics, patrolling, land mine warfare, field and combat operations. He is the son of Timothy Fuzi. Ir- rigon and Della Fuzi of Carson, WA. The private is a 1990 graduate of Stevenson High School, Washington. New to the stage and showing much promise, Joe Healy as a farm boy, Iffy Cann, carried an old shotgun throughout the play, even when “ Walking with Emmeline” his girlfriend. Heidi Nelson. " I was shooting at a chicken hawk and shot a skunk instead.” The trio of city girls (Lori Straley, Cindi Doherty and Sherry Hiatt), the bouncy middle-school junior high chorus and the gingham -clad milkmaids added special touches to round out the musical. Following the intermission the show moved from the ridiculous to the sublime when the Community Choir gave a performance ending with a lively rendition of Hank Williams’ “ Jambalaya.” It was an evening of music and fun. Music directors Kathy Hoskins, Kitty Bredemeier, Geneva Mathews, Rikka Tews and Bob Isted are to be commended. Playing to a sold-out-standing- room only house Saturday night, M rs. C alv ert’s second grade songsters, the H I T. Troupe’s “ No, No a Million Times No” and the South Morrow Community Choir concert came off as a hit with an au dience of over 300. ending in a stan ding ovation. From the candle-lit tables where guests enjoyed both “ sinfully delicious" and ’’virtuously weight- conscious” desserts, through the boos, hisses and ahs and applause appropriate to the old-time meller drammer to the superbly rendered numbers of the community chorus, all went well. Audience applause rated Tony Becket’s performance as the hero Noble Hart the top hit of the show. Playing a “ kinder dumb” young farmer, Tony repeatedly broke into tears and held his rural uneducated dialect throughout, even in his solo to his Nellie..“ ! need you like a polecat needs the pertection of smell.” Playing opposite hime, Sherry Bingham as Nellie Quackingbush carried the ’’eddicated” vocabulary of several syllable words like a pro and brought enthusiastic applause with her solo, “ I’m as Pure as the Driven Snow.” In top-hat and tails, Louis Carlson, portraying Stafford Blackman with Janie Cupps led the Cardinal ef fort with 9-9 serving, eight points and six aces. She also was eight for nine in hitting with three kills and two stuff blocks. April Taylor came into the game and served well, mak ing six of her seven serve attempts with five aces and six points. Amy Pointer had 100 percent serving with six points and three aces. The JV squad won 15-6. lone Middle School has perfect record By Becky Wagenblast The lone Middle School Cardinals kept up their perfect record as they beat Arlington on October 10. Arl ington has a coed volleyball team since they don’t have a football team. lone fell behind in the first game 5-2, however, the Cards came alive and Marie Tworek served nine points in the game to put lone in the lead IMS finished out the game 15-12. Game number two was a close race 16-14. LaRee Anderson serv ed 100 percent and had six points. The lead went back and forth but Melissa McElligott soon closed the game for the Cards. McElligott serv ed four unreturned serves to finish off the Goslings. lone has a 4-0 season record and was looking forward to trying to make it 5-0 against Umatilla Tues day. The Cardinals will also play in an " A ” tournament in Stanfield on October 19 lone will go up against the Heppner Ponies for their first game. lone defeated the Ponies in an earlier match.
