The Fillies fought hard in game one to win 16-14. April Rollis served for five points and Kelsie Evans helped w ith four. Evans led the Fillies in game two with six points helping the Fillies to victory 15-13. September 24 the young Fillies traveled to Pilot Rock, and defeated the Rockets in three games 12-15, 15-11, 15-12. Deanna Peck served for six points in game one. Alissa Brownfield and April Rollis served for seven and six points respective ly in the second game and Tina Chinen led with five points in game three. The Fillies played at home Sept. 26 winning both games against Weston-McEwen 15-11 and 15-7. Exchange student Roberta Luciano served for seven points with Alissa Brownfield adding four in the first game. The second game Kelsie Evans had five points and April Rollis served for three. Actors practice for opening of play JV Fillies continue winning streak By Lisa Willman The winning streak continued for the JV Fillies as they beat Condon Sept. 17, 15-13, 15-6 and Wahtonka two days later 15-8, 15-5. Jenm Krein served four in the first game against Condon and Char Coe dominated with six in the second game. The Fillies dominated Wahtonka in the first game as they worked together as a team and beat the Eagles 15-8. Ruth Norton did a good job on the nets until she landed wrong and twisted her left ankle. The rest of the Fillies pulled it together with the serves of Sara Greenup for six points and Jodi Johnston for five. Game two started out a little closer as the Eagles tied the score up at three. The Fillies went on to pull ahead under Jenni Krein’s serves and Chrisy Schult'z spikes. Schultz had three out of six spikes for points and Krein served nine. Donita Sharp helped the Fillies out with four serves of her own. The score was 15-5 in favor of the Fillies. The JV record is now 5-0 for the season. Billed as a hillarious old-time musical, the play is be ing put on by the Heppner Intergenerational Theater. Fillies lose to Grant Union By Lisa Willman After previously losing to Grant Union at the tournament in John Day the Fillies were bent on revenge but lost to the Bobcats once again. Sept. 10 on the Fillies home court. In the first game the Fillies kept the score close during the entire game Sheila Dunaway helped her team serving pulling within one point. The game was tied up at 13 but the Fillies couldn't control the ball and Grant Union spiked to win the game by two points. Fleppner controlled the second game taking a win 15-2. Becky Nor ton led servers with eight in a row. Game three proved to be the most exciting for the Fillies as the score was tied three different times during the game. It wasn’t until the very end that Grant Union blasted their way to victory. Sheila Dunaway had an excellent game, diving and hustling to save the ball. The varsity’s first league game will be Thursday, Sept. 19 at home against Wahtonka. Coast fishing trip nets two big ones Photo by Wayne Hams By Anne Morter The lone Lady Cardinals won two league matches and one non conference match this past week, keeping their league winning streak intact. On Tuesday, lone hosted Helix and inhospitably defeated them, 15-5, 9-15, 15-5. Amy Pointer sparked the Cardinal effort with perfect 17 of 17 serving and 12 points. Pointer also played ag gressively at the net where she was successful on seven of eight hits with two kills. Coach Greg Likens noted that Amy Pointer played "the best she had played all year," in that match, lone won the JV match 15-6. On Thursday. lone took on non- conference opponent. Monument, in lone. The lady Cards won the match 15-12, 15-6. against Monument who played with no substitutes. Nancy Morter looked sharp at the net where she was 13 of 13 in the hitting department with six kills. Brandi Ball was high point scorer with 10 points on perfect 10-10 serving. The lone JV squad fell 2-15 in their game. The Cards closed the week Friday with a 15-2, 15-3 win over a young Arlington squad. Janie Cupps was high point with nine points on 10 for 10 serving and four aces. She also was 7-7 in hitting with two kills. Kristine Bedortha added seven points on 7-8 serving plus four aces. The JV team won their game 15-7. Ponies VB beat Rockets By Lisa Willman With two seventh grade teams and one eigth grade team it proved to be a long afternoon Friday, Sept 20 for Pilot Rock as the Heppner Ponies came out on top in a total of six games. The Ponies No. two team played first in a close game with the score tied several times. They came out on top 16-14. In game two the Ponies took the lead and kept it as Kim McCurry served for nine serves to lead the team to victory 15-3. The eighth graders challenged Pilot Rock next with both games close as Jessica Sumner led with four Rob Britt, 15, of Irrigon poses with two salmon he caught on the mouth of the Columbia near Warrenton. Rob, the son of Paul and Carleana Britt, was accompanied by his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Robert Britt of Lexington. serves helping her team to win 15- 12. Game two was another close game with the Ponies winning 16- 14. Tina Kemp had an excellent game serving for six points. The final games of the afternoon were the Ponies No. 1 team which consists of the other seventh graders and Pilot Rock. The girls took the lead and kept it with serving by Cim- mie Huth and Jennifer Rankin both scoring six and four points respec tively. The Ponies won 15-7. The last game the Ponies took the lead and never let Pilot Rock catch up. The final score was 15-10. Nicole VanEtta serverd 11 points for an outstanding game.
