The Gardners were married in Dufur where both attended Dufur High V They moved to Heppner in 1952 where they were associated with Nor thwest Liquified Gas Company for 12 years. In 1964 they purchased Wilson’s Men's Wear from Shirley and Bill Blake, changing the name to Gardner's Men s Wear. They retired from the store in 1983 after their son Roe and his wife Marilynn purchased the store. Arts and crafts club to meet The Morrow County Creative Arts and Crafts Club will meet at Kate’s Pizza Tuesday. Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. Members are asked to bring a ‘white elephant' to sell at this meeting. Plans will be finalized for the arts and crafts sale, silver tea and silent auction to be held October 12 from 9 a m. to 5 p.m. at the St. Patrick's Center. Fillies lose ** ■ * ' . \ V* - * ' By Lisa Willman The Heppner Varsity Fillies, suf fered from a case of first game jit ters and fell to the Union Bobcats in the first game of the season on Hepp- ner’s home court Friday, Sept. 6, losing the first and third matches. The Fillies rallied back for the se cond match with much more inten sity. Both teams utilized three hits to try to upset their opponents. Play went back and forth with neither team getting ahead more than a cou ple of points. The Fillies good team effort pulled off the win, 15-13. In the third match the Fillies started off with excellent sets and spikes but couldn’t stay consistent losing 6-15. “ We showed a lot of hustle," stated coach Terri Gentry. "W e didn't let things go completely, but it was very evident that we had first game jitters. Now we just need to settle down and not get so upset over our mistakes.” Heppner’s young C-team didn't fare well against Union, losing the first and third sets, but managed to win the second, 15-11. Coach Bob Sagely’s girls worked well together Tina Chinen led servers with nine in the second game and Alissa Brownfield served for five in the third game. Johnson, son of Gerald Johnson, Irrigon, recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot. San Diego. CA. During the training cycle, recruits are taught the basics of battlefield survival, introduced to typical military daily routine and personal and professional standards. All recruits participated in an ac tive physical conditioning program and gained proficiency in a variety of military skills including first aid. rifle marksmanship and close-order drill. Teamwork and self-discipline are emphasized throughout the cycle. Johnson is a 1990 graduate of Riverside High School. Boardman. Classes will be held Mondays and Tuesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Heppner Neighborhood Center. FFA to hold potluck O b itu a rie s Woodrow Huston Graveside services for Woodrow Huston were held August 28. Burial was at the Northern Lights Cemetery at Fairbanks, Alaska. Mr. Huston, 78, a retired master mechanic, died Friday, Aug. 23, 1991. He was bom March 29, 1913, near Eightmile to Guy and Elsie Farmer Huston, the youngest of four children. In 1930 he became a licensed pilot and flew for a short time for Barney Airlines which later became Boeing Airlines and today is known as United Airlines. In 1949 he went to Alaska and worked in Suntram a as a powerhouse operator for Healy River Coal Corp. In 1960 he work ed as a master mechanic on the D.E.W. line in the Northwest Ter ritories and Greenland until his retirement in 1974. Survivors include his sister, Ninon E Rill, Heppner; and nephews Evan Rill, Ellensburg, WA.; Myron Rill, Othello, WA.; Lynn Rill, Fairbanks, Alaska; Cecil and William Rill, Heppner; nieces Charlene Thomas of Las Vegas, NV and Sharon Trout of San Antonio, TX. If I had neighbors within hearing distance, they might have had a com ment or two regarding my morning start. It’s about the ‘country’ part of town and country...there was a big black bull wandering around my yard as I walked out the door this a m. He had obviously enjoyed my raspberry patch and was starting on the snapdragons and geraniums, not to mention what he did to the rail fence as "my greeting” sent him back to the pasture. I’m sure he is having his own beautiful morning back in my yard right this very minute. Graveside funeral services for Bet ty Gene Rood were held Wednesday morning. Sept. 18 at the Hermiston Cemetery. Mrs. Rood, 66, of Hermiston, formerly of Heppner, died Monday, Sept. 16, 1991 at Good Samaritan Center in Hermiston. She was bom Oct. 30, 1924 at Central Point. Mrs. Rood and her husband of 47 years, Gerald C. Rood, were longtime Heppner residents where she was employed in the office at Kinzua (Mill) Corporation for 35 years. After retirement, she and her husband moved to Hermiston in 1987. Survivors include her husband Gerald, at the home; son, Kevin E. Chick of Heppner; daughter Susan ‘Dee’ Chick of Stanfield; sisters Elsie Brewold of Brookings and Maxine Thompson of Crescent Ci ty, CA.; and three grandchildren. Bums Mortuary, Hermiston, was in charge of arrangements. LaVerne Van Marter LaVeme Van Marter Jr., 71, of Portland, formerly of Heppner, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 1991, at Woodland park Hospital in Portland. A memorial service will be held at the Heppner Elks Lodge on Satur day. Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. Mr. Van Marter was born Nov. 13, 1919 at Heppner to LaVeme and Muriel McCarty Van Marter. He grew up in Heppner and graduated from Heppner High School then attended the University of Oregon. In 1939, he was stricken with polio. In 1944, he went into the in surance business at Heppner with Frank Turner. The business later became known as Turner Van Marter & Bryant. On Aug. 19, 1946, he married Laurel Jean Ball of Hermiston. She died in 1985. He retired in 1986 and on Dec. 27, 1986, married Julie Wattenburger. He was a lifetime member of BPOE 358 and formerly served as exalted ruler, district deputy, and chairman of the Oregon Elks Foun dation He was a life master bridge player and held master points in chess, and was an avid stamp collec tor. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and the Episcopal Church in Heppner Survivors include his wife, Julie Van Marter, at the home; sons, LaVeme Van Marter III of Portland and Paul Van Marter of John Day; stepsons. Steven Johnson of Portland and Phillip Johnson of Anchorage, Alaska; stepdaughters. Susan Kranz- piller of Mannheim.
