Little League All Stars announced
Willow Creek Little League All Stars
The Willow Creek Little League
All Stars were announced recently.
Willow Creek will play Deschutes
All Stars on Wednesday, July 17 at
8 p.m. in Hermiston. The single
elimination tournament with loser
bracket games will run through
Saturday, July 20.
South Morrow County team places first

Members are nominated and
selected by the coaches and
managers of the league. Members
include Jory Crowell, Steve Allen
and Luke Swanson from the lone
Cardinal team; Jerid Ployhar, Jim
Schlaich, Donnie Pointer and Adam
Doherty from the Heppner Braves;
Eric Schonbachler and Chris Jones
from the Heppner Pirates; Brian
Koffler and Jeff Wilson from the
Heppner Giants; J.D. Shannon and
Cody McRoberts from the Condon
Angels and Tim Wilkins from the
Arlington Cubs. The All Star team
will be coached by Jim Swanson and
manager will be Dick Allen from the
lone Cardinals.
The South Morrow County, Columbia Tri-
County Babe Ruth team coached and
managed by Tom Wicklund and Rick
Johnston placed first in District 7 league play
winning 14 games and lost one game early
in the season to Irrigon. The South Morrow
County team consists of kids ages 13-15 from
Lexington, Heppner and lone. Columbia Tri-
County teams include teams from Irrigon,
Umatilla and Boardman.

was held June 11 at the Willow
Creek Country Club with 39 ladies
attending from Heppner. Boardman

Ice cream social planned at Valby
Beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday, July
21, everyone in the family can ex
perience a little bit of history at an
old-fashioned ice cream social at the
Valby Lutheran Church in the
Gooseberry area.
Guests can expect ice cream
frozen on the spot in old-time crank-
type freezers, special-recipe
homemade toppings and fun with
skits and old favorite songs from the
1890s to the 1930s.
The event is staged as an AAL
matching funds grant for re-roofing
the historic church.
Everyone is also welcome to at
tend worship service at 4 p.m. that
day.

The Oregon Department of Fish
and Wildlife Division will soon be
joining many other wildlife enforce
ment agencies in North America in
the use of wildlife decoys.
The wildlife enforcement decoy
(WED) a device used to simulate
wildlife, consisting of real or ar
tificial parts. The WED will be us
ed in detecting and apprehending
violators illegally harvesting
Oregon’s wildlife resource. The ad
vantage to using the WED is that the
Fish and Wildlife Division will be
able to target problem areas and in
tercept the offender before wildlife
is killed.
During the past month the game
officers have received training in the
proper and safe methods of using the
WED.
Statistics show that the illegal
harvest o f O regon’s wildlife
resource is increasing. Conventional
methods of detection and apprehen
sion are not solving the problem. A
progressive enforcement program is
required, the use of the WED is one
such program, said an OSP news
release.
The WED’s will be utilized in pro
blem areas during day time and night
time.

Closed fire season was declared
for the Central Oregon District of the
Oregon Department of Forestry at
12:01 a m. Saturday, June 22.
During the closed fire season,
open burning is restricted except by
permit.
The following requirements for
forest operations are now in effect:
♦Equipment must be equipped
with spark arresters and fire
extinguishers;
♦fire tools must be carried;
♦watchman service is required;
♦smoking is prohibited within an
operation area.
These restrictions and re
quirements apply to lands protected
by the Oregon Department of
Forestry in M orrow , Crook.
Deschutes, Gilliam, Grant, Harney,
Hood River, Umatilla. Wasco and
Wheeler Counties.
If you would like to obtain a bur
ning permit or if you have questions,
please contact the Oregon Depart
ment of Forestry in John Day at

the girls to Boardman where a ski
boat awaited them for the annual
Boardman marine parade on the Col
umbia River.
