Heppncr Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, June 26, 1991 - FIVE mm Martins, Nelsons attend conference By Anne Morter Fredrick and Helen Martin and Chuck and Lisa Nelson were delegates to a recent Central Pacific Conference of the United Church of Christ. The annual spring assembly was held at the church’s camp. Camp Adams, near Colton, Oregon, June 14-16. The conference includ ed delegates from Oregon, Idaho and southern Washington. A highlight of the conference was the dedication of the camp’s new building. Trinity Hall. The keynote speaker for the con ference was Dr. Gabriel Fackrey, professor of Christian theology at the Andover Newton Theological In stitute in Newton Center, MA. His theme was “ Educating the whole church; forward to the basics.” Several resolutions were discuss ed and passed concerning universal health care, call to Christian-Muslim dialogue, and issues pertaining to homosexuality. Next year’s spring assembly will be held in Mountain Home, Idaho, from May 15-17. IHS grad earns Army Reserve honors Wendy Anderson, a student at lone High School has received the United States Army Reserve Na tional Scholar/Athlete Award. Anderson was presented with a scholar/athlete award medallion on May 19 by Sergeant Jeffery Acker man of the U.S. Army Recruiting Station in Pendleton. Anderson shares this honor with winners in high schools throughout the country, from Florida to Hawaii. Each year the Army Reserve spon sors the program to recognize and honor top male and female high school scholars and athletes across the nation. Wendy Anderson Theresa Lindsay earns honors Theresa M. Lindsay, Lexington, is listed on the 1990-91 spring semester honor roll at the Universi ty of Portland. She is a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences. The University of Portland is an independently governed, residential, four-year Catholic university offer ing a curriculum of arts, sciences, humanities and professional pro grams at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Lexington News ^ -:-Thursday was a busy day for Bunchgrass Rebekah Lodge and Holly Rebekah Lodge when state president Lora Dickinson, and the ISG Donna Blades, visited the lodges, meeting with Bunchgrass in the afternoon. Thursday evening the Holly members and guests with the DG Marshall John Blades enjoyed a din ner at the V & G Tavern and then held a most instructive meeting in the evening. NG Kathy Tellechea presided. Guests were introduced along with Geri Martin, Eastern Oregon chairman of the Living Legacy committee, and Hilda Yocom, DDP. A tribute to the Rain bow was given by Holly Mosteller, and a tribute to the Hummingbird, Delpha Jones. Gifts were presented the guests with the president receiv ing a lovely shirt adorned with hum mingbirds and orchids made by Luella Taylor. A school of instruc tion was given with the state presi dent and the DG Marshal speaking. Refreshments were served in the din ing room by the hostesses, Hilda Yocom and Geri Martin. -¡-Wednesday Hilda Yocom, Delpha Jones and Valda Smith at tended the meeting of Sunbeam Rebekah Lodge in Hermiston for the president’s official visit. At the meeting Donna Blades presented the lodge the cash award won at the assembly in Portland for first place winner in the CrimeAlert program. The project will be on display at the Umatilla County Fair and at the Morrow County Fair. -¡-Saturday Geri Martin and Delpha Jones attended the district meeting at Joseph when the president paid her official visit. Geri Martin was introduced at the meeting as one of the president's appointed commit tee people. The group was entertain ed by the recreation of the bank hold up on Main Street in Joseph, which is one of that city’s tourist attrac- ________ By Delpha Jones tions. According to the story, desperadoes on horseback robbed the bank, had a shoot-out with the sheriff and one person got away with the loot, never having been found. -:-Eldon and Barbara Gilbert returned home on Sunday from a week's slay in Eugene where they at tended the state grange session as voting delegates from Wheatland Pomona. -:-Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Baker and Crystal were visitors last week in Seaside and Lincoln City. -¡-Kristin Skow, daughter of Jeanette and Tom Skow of Red mond, is visiting her grandparents Phylis and Delbert Piper. -¡-Brenda and Janie Jones from Spokane, WA. are visiting their grandparents Hilda and Joe Yocom. -¡-Marie Steagall was a Saturday visitor to Hood River where she at tended a party honoring her granddaughter. -¡-The Breshears family reunion was held Sunday at theMaryhill Park on the River. Those attending from this area were Marie Steagall, Bob and Beverly Steagall, Pat Dougher ty and Cindi Kannard, Deanna Brandehagen, Howard and June Crowell and grandchildren, Edwina Richeldirfer, Vera and Dave Steagall and Helen and Evertt Crump. -¡-Vacation Bible School at the Lexington Baptist Church ended on Friday with a program at the church. Around 44 students were enrolled. The evening of the program the Sun day school rooms were decorated as Biblical scenes such as a market place, sheep grazing area, a synagogue and a carpenter shop. The youngsters also escorted their parents on a “ trip” through the Bi ble giving them a bit of history and Biblical stories. Following the special songs and the presentation of certificates, refreshments were serv ed and visiting was enjoyed. Currins place Steve Currin of Heppner has earn ed $17,980 for 12th place in the PRCA 1991 world standings all- around cowbov. Kelli Fletcher-Currin, Echo, has earned $10,730 for $3th place in bar rel racing. Two sessions of beginner’s classes will be offered along with one ses sion for advanced beginners.
