I’m proud to be an American. Thank you, for this occasion on this Memorial Day where I might share with you my pride in America. We are here, of course, to celebrate the memory of those who have gone before us. W e’re celebrating the memory of Francie’s grandmother, Helen Harris who passed away May 17, 1991 aged 85 years. And we’re here to celebrate the memory of Laurel’s cousin. Amber Rollins who passed away May 13, 1991, aged 15 years. We are here to celebrate the memory of every grandmother and cousin and friend and relative who has preced ed us in death. Above all else, we are here to celebrate the memory of Tench Alldrich and Paul Rietmann and all your sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, fellow Americans who gave their lives in the line of duty to defend the American way of life. In no small way we are here to honor all those among us who have serv ed with honor the greatest nation on the face of the earth, living and dead. I salute you all. I salute you because I am proud to be your countryman, I am proud to claim you as my countrymen. I salute you because I am free. Free to do the work that I am suited for and that you find useful. No where else in the world could I have, in a single lifetime, labored as a farmer, a railroad fireman, a lawyer, a winemaker, a wood craftsman and a newspaper publisher. And there is so much more to do. Americans are alone in the world in their freedom to work. To work hard and long and to reap the benefits of their labor. I salute you because I am free to build and maintain a family. Free to love and to be loved by a good woman. Free to raise children who I can nourish and train and educate and to be proud. Only in America does the family stand in greater importance than the state, with the freedom to give and take, to compromise, to forgive and be forgiven so that the family remains as a unit. I salute you because my family is free to pray wherever and whenever we choose or not to. We are free to rejoice in the word and work of God in any of his huge number of houses to worship. We are free to apply the teaching of Jesus Christ to our daily lives and to aspire to a better life for ourselves and our neighbors and when life is over to believe in an after life. I salute you because my son, Harold, is free to study, to learn, and ex pand his knowledge without limit. I envy him his youth and his keen mind. I envy his freedom to know what ever piques his curiosity. America presents the greatest opportunity it ever has for the diligent, learned, ambitious young people to achieve the satisfying life. No where in the world does a young man or woman have the freedom choice to do as their own in terest may lead. I salute you because my daughter. Laurel, is free to pursue her dreams unhampered by pre-conceived notions about what is ‘proper’ work for a young lady. I an proud that America has wrestled to the ground the idea that certain classes of people are barred from part of America's freedom because of their color or sex or nationality of their ancestors. America is a land of individuals and while we are all different from all others, we are all the same in the eyes of the law. Finally, I salute you for this occasion. One hundred twenty five years ago, Henry C. Welles of Waterloo, New York, suggested the dead of the Civil War should be remembered by decorating their graves with flowers. The very same year, the ladies of the Friendship Cemetery, in Columbus. Mississippi, honored the casualties of the Battle of Shiloh with flowers. Miss Emma Hunter of Boalsburg Pennsylvania, decorated the graves of all the fallen in the Battle of Gettysburg. From its very inception. Memorial Day was a time for honoring those who have fallen in battle, no matter what side they fought on. North and South were joined again, in the observance of Memorial Day. I am proud to exercise the right they fought and died for. the right to assemble and memorialize across the artificial lines we draw. On this day, we ignore those old North-South divisions and honor our deceased family and friends as Americans. I am proud to be an American. Thank you very much. Air Life Depends On You Today...
