The confusion may stem from the fact that both swarming termites and ants are attracted to light, which is why you often see insects swarming around buildings. On the other hand, seeing swarming insects around win dows iflside your home may indicate that you have a termite infestation. If swarmers are spotted outside emerging from a tree stump, in theory, house A and house B near by might be visited and a colony started. Swarmers are not normally strong fliers. They can easily be carried by wind currents. And although they only fly for 150 feet or so, a slight breeze may disperse them into other suitable environments. Termites are capable of nesting in dead and down lumber, old fence posts, wooden bridges, firewood and other wooden items located within reach of swarmers searching for a standing crop of cellulose, their basic- nutritional staple. The results of their feasting can be seen in sagging roofs, sloping floors, stressed or broken beams, loose trim and cracked plaster. If a swarm is spotted, or you see the presence of broken wings in your home, your pest control company can take proper steps to eradicate the lone Honor Society inducts members Photo by Pam Minster L-R: Jannie Cupps, Danielle Stefani, David Wagenblast, Crystal Minster and Ryan Halvorsen all inducted to NHS. On their final day they stopped at Portland State University, where the students sat in on a university wood wind rehearsal in the morning. “ In the afternoon they split into two groups and the university’s wood wind and brass specialists worked directly with the kids," said band director Bob Isted. This is a particularly good band group, Mr. Isted indicated. “ I thought they could handle the rigors of a tour," he explained, “ and they The students spent their first night at Seaside, where some played pokerball and others went to the beach. Termite control is the least susceptible to do-it-yourself techni ques. On the other hand, not seeing a swarm should not give the homeowner a false sense of securi ty. A routine inspection can reveal the presence of termites in your home. Homeowners, themselves, can detect the “ shelter tubes” through which the insects travel from their colony in the earth to the wood they destroy.
