Minster, April Taylor and Tanya Anderson all recorded personal bests in their events but failed to score. lone tennis team s com pete in match, tournament By Anne Morter The lone tennis teams slowed the pace somewhat from last week, play ing in a match on Tuesday and in a tournament on Saturday. The Cards traveled to Umatilla on Tuesday. April 9 where they played in very cold and windy weather. The Cardinals had only one win for the day, when Erika Bergstrom and Heidi Orem downed Lori Adams and Sara Nelson. In other doubles’ action, Brandi Ball and Kari Morgan fell to Jen Adams and Shawna Fry. 7-9. In singles’ play, Nancy Morter dropped her m atch, 4-8, to Umatilla’s Mel Tarter. Kristine Bedortha also lost, falling to Kristy Hoch, 0-8. On the boys’ side. Brent Sheirbon fell to Javier Ingles, 4-8, and Mike Green lost to James Purves, 1-8. Doubles’ team, Aaron Heideman and Tony Bjerke, fell to John Thomas and Doug Surber, 2-8. On Saturday, the Cardinals com peted at the Helix Tournament held at Blue Mountain Community Col lege under much more pleasant weather conditions. Neither team managed to score a point in the team standings but coach Cathy McCabe was pleased with their efforts, noting that several players had their best Remember Mom with a card and gift from Hallmark. Mother's Day is Sunday M a y 12 games ever. On the girls’ side, Nancy Morter won her first match, defeating Con nie Keltz of Stanfield, 8-2. She then dropped her next two matches to finish out of the money. Because of the set-up of the brackets, Morter’s first found opponent ended up plac ing fourth while Morter did not place. Kari Morgan, usually one half of the Cards' number-one doubles’ team, played singles on Saturday. According to McCabe, she did quite well, winning two out of three mat ches and just missing the fourth place spot. Doubles’ team, Erika Bergstrom and Heidi Orem, won one of their three matches downing Rorden and Fitzgerald of Weston-McEwen, 8-4 in their second match. In boys’ play, both Aaron Heideman and Mike Green lost in the opening round but came back to win their next match in the first round of consolation play. Heideman defeated Neal DeBolt of Arlington, 8-5, playing a strong match, accor ding to coach McCabe. Green show ed improvement in his game, down ing Ron Ough of Stanfield, 8-4. Heideman and Green lost a shot at the consolation finals, falling in their final matches of the day. District spelling contest April 17 The annual Morrow County School District spelling contest will be held Wednesday, April 17, at Sam Boardman Elementary School at 6:30 p.m. The top three spellers in each attendance area will be com peting in three divisions: Division I (elementary through grade 6); Divi sion II (grades 7 through 9); Divi sion III (grades 10 through 12). The first place winneis from each division of the district contest will New Arrival of DISH TOWELS lots of colors and designs qualify to participate in the state of Oregon spelling contest held at the Oregon State Fair. Saturday, August 31. The public is welcome to observe the district contest. Theresa Proctor is in charge of local arrangements at Sam Boardman Elementary. People of all ages who have in terest in helping to produce plays and musicals are encouraged to join this group. The project will include all phases of theater art such as scenery design and construction, make-up, costumes, publicity, box office, lighting, sound and properties as well as acting and singing or play ing a musical instrument. The group has plans to choose a play soon, begin rehearsals and present the pro duction as summer stock in late June or early July. The Heppner Junior High girls and boys track team traveled to Umatilla for their second meet of the season on April 11 for competition on Umatilla’s all weather track. The Pony girls turned in fine in dividual performances to help them capture the team title. The boys, with only three out, turned in many quality times and distances along with personal bests to do well. Rondi Robinson put the shot 22’3” for a first and Alisha Marlatt came in fifth with 18’9 ” . Long jump: third-Jossie Evans, 11’5” ; fourth-M elissa M iller, 10’11” . Shaun Hisler placed second for the boys, 12’ 11” . Kelsie Evans placed first in the high jump 4 ’ 1 Vi” ; Dani Hill, se cond, 4 ’; and Char Coe third, 4 ’. Char Coe threw the softball 119’3” for a second place. Shaun Hilser threw 149’10” . 300m hurdles, Jessica Sumner came in third and John Qualls first for the boys. 100m hurdles Dani Hill placed third and Melissa Miller fifth. John Qualls placed first in the boys 1200m and'llna Kemp and Melissa Miller placed first and fourth respec tively for the girls. In the 400m relay Heppner came in first with Jessica Sumner, Tina Kemp, Renee Devin and Jossie Evans. First place finisher in the 400m was Kelsie Evans followed by Jossie Evans and Rondi Robinson. Shaun Hisler placed third in the 100m and Willie DeBoer placed fourth. In the 800m Kelsie Evans earned a first and Char Coe placed second. John Qualls placed first for the boys. Char Coe placed first in the 200m, Jessica Sumner-second and Rondi Robinson-third. Shaun Hisler plac ed second for the boys and Willie DeBoer placed fifth. Heppner’s medley relay team of Melissa Miller, Kelsie Evans. Ron di Robinson and Jossie Evans came in first. John Qualls threw the discuss 79’1” for a first. Heppner travels to Pilot Rock on April 18 for meet and then is at home April 25. Both meets start at 2 p.m. lone Youth Group plans Earth Day services By Anne Morter The lone Youth Group will host an Earth Day service at the lone lone Garden Club plant sale Tues. By Anne Morter The lone Garden Club will hold its annual plant sale on Tuesday, April 23, at the lone Legion Hall between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Most of the plants come from club member's gardens, although this year bedding plants will be available. The Garden Club organizes this sale each year, not on ly as their chief money-making pro ject but also as a community service. “ We welcome beginners-there is no such thing as a dumb question,” says, Delta Huber. She also says that anyone with an excess of plants is welcome to bring them. Pie and coffee will be available for gardeners as they peruse the plants and everything will be half-price after 1 p.m. United Church of Christ on Sunday, April 21 at 11 a.m. The in terdenominational youth group will provide music, do the readings and provide a special Earth Day cake afterwards. The Reverend Isa Brown will deliver the sermon. Youth par ticipating in the service are asked to meet at the church at 10:30 a.m. Other recent activities and con tributions by the Youth Group in clude an afternoon trip to the Tri- Cities, where members enjoyed shopping, pizza and a Tri-City American game, and contributions to both Eric Orem's trip to London and the Pregnancy Support Center in Hermiston. !
