The day went well for fourth-year coach, Cathy McCabe, and her young group of netters. Not only was the weather perfect for tennis, but they experienced a rare, windless day in Arlington to make playing conditions excellent. In girls’ action, the number one doubles team of Brandi Ball and Kari Morgan defeated Sandy Walters and Melissa Kinney of Arlington, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. The number two doubles team, consisting of Erika Bergstrom and Heidi Orem also won, defeating Melissa Kinney of Arlington and Angie Cox of Helix, 8-5. In singles’ play, number one singles player, Nancy Morter, lost in a tiebreaker to Sandy Walters of Arlington, 8-9. According to Coach McCabe, Nan cy rallied from a large deficit to tie the game, before losing in the tiebreaker. Also, Heidi Orem down ed Melissa Kinney of Arlington, 8-2, and Kristine Bedortha defeated Angie Cox of Helix, 8-5. On the boys’ side, number one singles player, Brent Sheirbon, defeated Travis Holton of Helix in a very close match, 7-5, 7-6. Freshman Mike Green lost to Greg Holton of Helix 0-8. In doubles’ play, Aaron Heideman and Tony Bjerke fell to Matt Nordin and Wayne Miller of Helix, 5-8. Miller is Helix’s coach who was filling in for an injured player. “ The day went well,” said Coach McCabe. “ We had more wins than losses-it was a good way to start the season,” she added. McCabe has 10 players out this season, four boys and six girls. Top returners for the Cards are Brent Sheirbon, Nancy Morter, Kristine Bedortha, Brandi Ball and Kari Morgan.
