Everyone Is Something Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, especially in Heppner. Even I’m a little Irish, just call me O’Glenn. And that’s the way it ought to be because it really is true that most of us are descended from a number of na tionalities and it gets all mixed up preny quick. A little Irish blood goes a long way, if you know what I mean I was talking to a friend of mine just the other day, telling him about the big celebration in Heppner on St. Patrick’s day and then he told me about the big celebration in Cleveland on Columbus’ By Ed Glenn Day. Now we don’t think about Col umbus’ Day much in these parts, but in Cleveland it’s a big deal. You see, there are a lot of Italians in Cleveland and Christopher Columbus was an Italian. In Cleveland nearly everybody is Italian, not just on Columbus’ Day, but all year long. But only American Italians celebrate Columbus’ Day. As they say in Cleveland, in a country discovered by Christopher Columbus and named after Amerigo Vespucci, what can be more American than a surname en ding in a vowel? Now why that made me think of it, I don’t know, but I remembered years ago being invited to one of the most magnificent feasts I have ever enjoyed. The occasion was Chinese New Year and my host had cooked and cooked and cooked for days getting ready. It was a pretty big party and I didn’t see a single person in which Chinese ancestry was evident, but as they say, we’re all a little Chinese on Chinese New Year And it isn’t necessary to be 100% Mexican to celebrate Cinco de Mayo nor do you have to be a devout Catholic to get a kick out of Mardi Gras. My Scandinavian friends celebrate St. Lucia every year and most of us have a day off on Martin Luther King Day. I’m a little bit French so I party hearty on Bastille Day. I asked one of my Indian friends what big celebration American Indians do up right and he told me each tribe has a different feast. I don’t know which tribe I belong to so I join them all. There's a few poor souls I know that aren’t a little Irish or Italian or something or another. They’re just plain Americans. But that’s not all bad either, because we have a celebration just for them, the Fourth of July And so they won’t feel too lonely, I join in that one too. I think it is marvelous that we can all hang on to a little bit of the old and pick up a little bit of the new. In my mind, that’s what America is all about. A place where we all learn to speak English even though we may be French or Spanish or Korean. A place where we can practice democracy even though we may have been the King's subject. A place where we can marry an Irish lass even though we might be a little Scotch Sometimes, though, ethnic background gets in the way of being an American. We’ve all seen that kind of zeal, and we owe it to ourselves to make everyone a little Irish. And a little German and a little Polyne sian. That way the Americanization of us all will make things a lot better. We have a little obligation in that regard too. You and I, the All American folks who are a little Irish and a little of this and that, can’t forget the folks who are a lot of something else. Sometimes we share a little fault in driving Africans into a ghetto, or preventing Mexicans from learning English. We've held Native Americans (who really discovered this place, you know) on reservations and we even put our Japanese Americans in concentration camps. Well, I’m going to enjoy being Irish on St. Patrick's Day, that’s for sure. And I’m going to do what I can to make sure all Americans can feel little Irish next year, AS I SEC IT ,VVVNVNA\NVVWVN\N5AVAVA\6A\\A<WV\\V/ Andrew Christopher Ferguson- a son Andrew Christopher was bom to Ernie Ferguson and Frances Pan toja, Boardman, on February 26, 1991, at Good Shepherd Hospital in Hermiston.
