The Cards racked up 44 rebounds to dominate their op ponents. Mike Garrett led the way with 20 boards and Aaron Heidcman, filling in for his sick cousin. Deacon, added seven. Gabe Garcia handed out six assists, David Wagenblast had five and Ryan Halvorsen added three. Wagenblast, Garrett and Halvorsen each had three steals to pace the Cardinals. lone had another good shooting night, hitting 29 of 69 from the floor for 42 percent. From the free throw line, they were nine of 17 for 53 per cent. Arlington was 17 of 58 from the floor for 29 percent and 4-9 for 44 percent from the line. “ It was an overall good effort,” commented coach LaRue. “ It was not a pretty win but we had our moments,” he added. This weekend, the Cardinals face Wheeler in Fossil on Friday and Echo at home on Saturday. By Anne Morter The Monday, Jan. 14 match against Arlington was a reschedul ed game that was cancelled from the previous Friday because of icy roads. When the Honkers finally made it to lone, they probably wish ed they had stayed home as the Car dinals rolled over them, 69-46. Cardinal fans were getting anxious as Arlington knocked in four three- pointers in the first quarter and allowed lone just a one-point advan tage at the end of the period. They were able to settle back into their seats in the second quarter as the Cards got their defense going and the game moving in their favor. The Cards took a 36-24 edge to the locker room at halftime and never looked back, outscoring the Honkers, 33-22 in the second half for the final margin. Mike Garrett was the game’s high scorer with 20 points. Defense, a mainstay in Iones’ girls’ basket ball, was highlighted with 25 steals. Jaime Lovett led in this department with seven steals and Becky Wagenblast added five. Couple this with lone’s meager total of 10 tur novers and Echo hardly got a chance to put up a shot. lone led going out of the first quarter, 14 to 0. In the second quarter lone had a chance to put in the substitutes, but still held Echo to only four points. IMS shot well for the game, making 14 for 39, for a 37 percent average, and 50 percent from the free throw line, making one out of two tries. During warmups. Hol ly Eckman twisted her ankle and left the floor in great pain. Stanfield scored the first basket of the quarter, but the Fillies came right back to score. Stanfield’s height made it hard for the Fillies to get re bounds or shoot. With 3:46 left, the Fillies were behind by six points in the first quarter. Then the second in jury of the game occurred. Amy Brownfield was knocked down and hit her head. She also appeared to be stepped on. After several tense minutes, she was carried off the floor and the game continued. Two minutes later at the buzzer, the score was Fillies 8, Stanfield 13. In the second quarter the Fillies were more in the game. Even though both teams fouled quite a bit, the Fillies were doing a better job defen sively, holding Stanfield to only five points, but were able to make only seven points themselves. It was dur ing this quarter the third accident befell the Fillies. Becky Norton went down with a sprained left ankle and she, too, was carried off the floor to the bench. Plagued by injuries the first half and behind by three points, the Fillies tried to make a comeback. Stanfield scored the first basket of the third quarter but Nikki Brisbois got hot, scoring five points in less than a minute. A worried Stanfield coach put their tall girl, Michelle Marcum, back in and they pulled ahead by seven points. With 2:58 left, Marcum fouled out and the Fillies had a chance to jump ahead, but couldn’t pull it off. At the end of the third quarter, the score was Fillies 22, Stanfield 29. In the fourth quarter the Fillies gave it all they had. With 5:55 left the score was 26-32. One minute later Fillies moved up to within four points and Stanfield lost their second player to fouls. With 2:04 on the clock, Heather Eckman also fouled out. The Fillies making shots count on the charity stripe, then pulled within one point. But with 1:28 left, the fourth and final accident of the game occurred when Nina Tucker injured her ankle scrambling after a loose ball. With only 30 seconds left and Stanfield stalling, they traveled. After a Fillies time out. Heppner came back to shoot but missed. Stanfield rebounded, got fouled and made 1-1 at the line to win 39-37. Brisbois led the team with 17 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists. Amy Greenup and Nina Tucker each added six points. When asked about the game, Coach Dowdy replied, “ we only lost by two points. We had a lot of pro blems, injury-wise, but the girls real ly hung in there. It shows what they are made of. It was a total team ef fort and they did good. I look for ward to when we play Stanfield again.” The Fillies next game will be January 19 in Heppner against Wasco County. Tip off is at 4 p.m. JV Fillies slip by Rockets oy Lisa Willman January 11 the Heppner Filly JVs traveled to Pilot Rock and started off playing excellent defense, preven ting Pilot Rock from scoring any baskets in the first quarter taking a win 23-20. The Fillies managed to score five points. COMPUTER PAPER Gazette-Times 676-9228 The second quarter Pilot Rock made attempted a comeback and held the Fillies to seven points. At half time the score board read 12-10. The third quarter was a draw point-wise, with both teams scoring only eight points. The fourth quarter was very aggressive defensively, with hardly any points were made. The Fillies had only three team fouls and played much better in the re bounding departm ent, scoring enough to win the game, 23-20. Chrissy Schultz led her team with eight points and eight rebounds. Jodi Johnston added five points and 12 rebounds. The next Junior Varsity’s game for the Fillies will be January 25 at Weston-McEwen. Melissa McElligott crashed the boards for eight rebounds, and Jaime Lovett had seven boards to help lone to a total of 28 rebounds. lone had six assists with Kimberly Bedortha dishing out four of them. IMS only had a total of eight fouls. The Cardinals looked sharp as they came out in new uniforms, red shorts and white T-shirts with lone Cardinals and the Cardinal emblem on the front, and the player’s name and number on the back. The Cardinals play two games this week, at Condon on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m ., and at Helix on Saturday at 10 a.m. Photo by Joyce Hughes Charlie Rathbun guards Stanfield shooter The Heppner Mustangs got back on the winning track Saturday night at home with a 76-43 win over the Stanfield Tigers. Heppner started fast, hitting their first five field goal attempts, and led 11-2 with barely two minutes gone. The score was 28-8 at the quarter and 50-20 at halftime and Heppner could have named the final score. Brandon Pedro had another strong game for Heppner. He had 19 points. 11 rebounds and 5 steals. This was the third game in a row Pedro was in double figures for rebounds. Jason Britt, the author of the fast start, scored 14 points and Bob Krein had 11. Charlie Rathbun hit the boards for light rebounds and four steals. Rick Osmin had a first for the Mustangs this season. Rick picked up his fifth personal foul with less than one minute left in the first half, a comical moment in the blowout. Vance Crofton was all the offense for Stanfield. He scored 28 points and had 13 of the 17 field goals the Tigers scored. The win places the Mustangs 3-1 in second place in the CBS behind several other teams. The lone girls J V team romped to a 47-27 win over the Condon JV team last Saturday, January 12. in Condon. The young Lady Cards jumped out to an 18-6 first quarter advantage and held a 25-12 edge at the half. In the third quarter, they once again outscored the Blue Devils, 18-6, and cruised home with the win. Kristine Bedortha led all scorers with 16 points, April Taylor added 13. Amy Pointer pulled down 10 re bounds. leading her team to a 27-24 rebounding advantage. lone nabbed a team total of 20 steals, led by Tanya Anderson with six. The Car dinals shot a very respectable 43 per cent from the field, making 19 of 44. From the foul line, they hit seven of 19 for 37 percent. Condon was 12 of 4 1 from the floor for 29 percent and three for eight from the line for 38 percent. Coach Tom Bedortha was pleas ed with his team’s efforts. He noted that Kristine Bedortha had a good game, making six of 10 from the field, three of five from the line and hitting one three-pointer.
