TWO - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, October 3, 1990 Nadine O’Brien resigns from Neighborhood Center Neighborhood Center spokesperson. ‘‘She always had a lot of energy and interest in the work of the Neighborhood Center She did a fine job of helping the center through a transitional period and many fine programs were provided for the residents of Morrow County.” The board honored her on September 28 with a party of ap preciation which was attended by board members, volunteers and sup porters of the center. Nadine O’Brien has resigned her position as coordinator of the South Morrow County Neighborhood Council effective the end of September. During the month of Oc tober Betty Tanner has been ap pointed interim coordinator by the board. Applications for a permanent coordinator are being accepted at the center until October 10. Board members say they hope to have a new coordinator by November 1. “ It will not be easy to find a replacement for Nadine,” said a Engagements Free parent ed class offered municating with them, helping young children to learn to cooperate, and nurturing emotional and social development. Participants in the course will receive a workbook as part of the course. The course is being taught by Heppner High School counselor Liz C urtis. C urtis received her bachelor’s degree in home economics and her master’s degree in counseling. She is a trained teacher for the STEP and EC/STEP programs. Those interested in more information about the course may contact Curtis at Heppner High School or by attending the first meeting October 15. Through the Great Start program, the Morrow County Children and Youth Commission will be offering a free parenting education course in Heppner this fall for the parents of pre-school aged children. The course begins Monday, October 15, at 7:30 p.m., in the Heppner High School Library. The course will follow the Early Childhood Systematic Training for Effective Parenting program EC/STEP. Pastor Hoobing will deliver a children’s sermon entitled, “ Extravagant Love” and sermon called “ The Bad Bargain.” Both sermons are based on scripture reading from St. Matthew 20: 1-16. Sunday School at Hope starts at 9:45 a m. with worship service at 11 a m. During the worship service at Hope the officers of the youth group will be installed: Laurel Webber- Gray, president; Aleida Goodyear, vice-president; Matt Hoobing, secretary; and Gretchen Berretta treasurer. There will be a “ Country Store” featuring sale items and a display of bird figurines carrying out the theme of “ Gardening is for the Birds and People Too.” Mrs. Elaine Belts of Pendleton and Mrs. Marian Allen of Portland first vice-president and second vice- president, respectively, of Oregon State Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. will be attending. The Heppner Club will be welcoming members from Umatilla, M orrow , Grant and G illiam counties. The fall meeting of Blue Mountain District #10 will be held October 9 at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall in Hepp ner. Registration and coffee hour will be 9 to 10 a.m. The meeting will be called to order at 10 a.m. by Virginia Grogan of Milton-Freewater, district director of District #10. Program will include a presentation of taped bird calls by Eva Lou Griener of Condon; and a video “ Watching Birds with Roger Tory Peterson” will be shown. Trisha graduated from Heppner High School in 1985 and has an associate degree, with honors, in radiologic technology from Boise State Universi ty. She graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in business administration from BSU. Ron graduated from Redmond High School and attended Blue Mountain Community College. He is employed at Wilson Pre-Cast in Bend. An October 27 wedding is planned at All Saints Episcopal Church in Heppner. Weed District board to meet The M orrow County Weed District will be having a board meeting Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Pettyjohn Building in Heppner. She gave the chapter updates on the ESTARL scholarship program. On Sunday, September 23, several chapter members visited Queen Esther Chapter No. 101 of Her- miston to attend the East Central Oregon Association meeting, which includes all chapters of the area. Sept. 28, the food sale committee held a successful food sale to serve the hunters. We express appreciation to all who contributed. Also that day 20 seniors from Wheeler, Gilliam and Morrow took the State Transportation Dept’s. workshop on assistance techniques for transporting seniors and handicapped. Those from here who passed the practical and written test and received their “ Passenger Assistance Technician” status were Darrel Vinson, Paul Jones, Dot Halvorsen and Jane Rawlins. Dot, our regular bus driver has taken the class several times and says she always learns something new. At their meeting last Wednesday, the Activities Committee reviewed brief ly the year’s program and announced that their October 24 meeting will be to hear reports from the chairmen of the various activities, to evaluate progress on the goals they set in October of ‘89, and to brainstorm and set goals for next year. Anyone interested in being on this committee or having suggestions of activities for next year is invited. Shirley Haugen is chairwoman, 676-5352. Next week: Quitters on Monday at 1 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. “ Swing into Shape” exercise group. Wednesday: serving helpers will be from the Methodist Church. Menu: chicken/rice casserole, green beans, apple-raisin salad, whole wheat rolls and pudding. Each week we give a door prize, a free meal ticket and a guest prize. Sr. Center board meets at 1 p.m. Sunday October 14 is the monthly potluck and games party at 4 p.m. Everyone reported having a great time at the September party at the Blake Ranch. Some people even accepted the “ Blake Ranch Challenge.” Please note two new looks at the center: new carpeting at the Willow Creek entrance and the sign in the window by the Main Street entrance telling who we are and what happens in this center. The Hardman Community Center will be open Saturday and Sunday, October 6 and 7 from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. for a hunter's breakfast. Linda Cecil from the Communitv Center says that in addition to breakfasts, lunches and dinners will also be served at reasonable prices. updates, and budgeting for 1991-92.
