The varsity suffered their first league loss in two years at the hands o f a tough Culver squad. Culver played very well while the inex perienced Cards struggled with their serving, a key factor, according to coach Jocelyn Jones. “ I was disap pointed in our serving,” said Jones. “ The scores were close and improv ed serving would have made them much closer.” The Lady Cardinals started the match playing tentatively on the serve-receive which their coach ex pected, due to their “ greenness.” A bright spot for the Cards was a marked improvement in their serve- receive as the match progressed. After the match, coach Jones told the girls that while they had dropped a league game, it was to their advan tage that Culver was on the other side o f the league. She figures the teams may meet again at the district tournament by which time the team should be used to playing together and be more experienced. The JV team chalked up a win, 15-11, 12-15, 15-1. Coach Jones was pleased with their efforts, say ing they played a “ heads up” game of volleyball. She also said that their serving improved in that match as they gained confidence. The Cardinals next games are at the Wahtonka tournament in The Dalles to be played Saturday. Sept. 15.______________ W R IG H T C H E V . IN C . September is here. School has started and the vacation and summer sorts of things are past so it’s time to get with it. This is not to say that many activities here have not continued throughout the summer. Our office has been open week days from 9 a.m . to 5 p.m. We have served a meal each Wednesday noon. The Dollaride car has continued to run, the quitters have quilted each Monday, and each Tuesday and Thursday an exercise group has met. In addition, we’ve had some special events like Senator Hatfield and the Chamber of Commerce as guests one Wednesday, Steve Pettyjohn meeting with our board to outline ways to improve the acoustics in the din ing room and just last week baking and serving potatoes for the Cycle III dinner. Now we can look forward to some new additions and projects. The Sunday potlucks will open the season with a picnic supper at the Blake Ranch September 16 at 4 p.m. The bus will leave the center at 2 p.m. We may play croquet, horse shoes, golf chipping or “ the Blake Ranch challenge” (a surprise after we arrive.) Bring either a salad, dessert or a contribution toward the meat. The exercise class, which lost its physical therapist supervisor shortly after the group was organized, now has the tape he recommended when he left. This tape “ Swing Into Shape,” made by physical therapists at Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, Wisconsin, has three levels o f non-aerobic exercise. Grace Drake has donated a portable TV and the board has pur chased a VCR (thanks to a donation by the Quitters) so the class can use it for its routines. The group leader is Velma Wight. All seniors are welcome to participate. The Quilters and Company has announced that this fall they will be lear ning how to make a quilt with the option to make blocks, smaller quilts or wall hangings using these quilt construction techniques. These will be individual projects. The Center board recently purchased a telephone answering machine from a grant by United Way. Now, after three rings, a message may be left for us at any hour on any day. This week: Wednesday VFW at 7:30 p.m .; Sunday potluck at the Blake Ranch, office staff meeting at 10:30 a.m. Next weeksQuilters group, Monday, 1 to 4 p.m; Tuesday and Thursday exercise group at 10 a.m .; Wednesiday noon dinner menu: sweet ‘n sour pork with rice, brussels sprouts, applesauce, bread and cookies. Helpers with serving will come from the Catholic church. We want to express appreciation for all the help we had for doing the potato bake for Cycle HI. We had a blast.
