Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, August 29, 1990 - THREE Heppner woman travels worldwide A local woman has come a long way since her birth in Heppner—a long long way. Mary Goheen has literally travel ed the earth. Born to Clara Reid Beamer and William Jefferson Beamer, her yen for travel began with her employ ment with Albina Dock, in Portland. Albina Dock was owned by Sir James McDonald aScot, British con sul and businessman and Anthony Getti, an English businessman. The two also owned McDonald and Getti Norpac Shipping. When Albir Dock was sold, Mary accompanied the sale and worked for the city rf Portland Commission of Public Docks. When the commmission merged with the Port of Portland, Central Red Apple Market proudly welcomes all friends and customers to our GRAND OPENING beginning Wed., Aug. 29th and continuing through Sept. 8th. There will be refreshments, sampling, lots of great prizes and fun. Don’t miss it!! __________________ Forrie & Gail and staff Mary was again included in the tran saction. She eventually retired from the Port of Portland after 25 years. “ I loved the work,” said Mary. “ Everyone was so wonderful to me. »* M ary's husband C lare was employed all of his life in the field of transportation, working for Con solidated Freightways, Pihl Transfer and Storage and Pacific Motor Transport. The two met in Portland at the first place Mary was sent to apply for a job by the business col lege she had attended. They were married in 1932 in Salem. “ We en joyed an active life,” commented Mary. “ Clare loved to travel.” On their first of many journeys, the Goheens took six months of leave and traveled around the U.S. Their first overseas trip was to the Orient- -Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore. In 1971 they traveled to Europe, including H olland, Belgium , Switzerland, and Germany. In ‘72 they traveled to Europe and also visited Scotland and Denmark. In 1973 they saw Spain, Portugal and Morrocco; in 1974 in the Middle East their tour included Lebanon' Syria, Egypt, Jprdan, Turkey-arid Israel. They also saw the palace of King Hussein. In 1975 Mary and Clare toured the Iron Curtain countries including the cities of Prague, Czechoslovakia; W arsaw, Poland; V ilinius, Lithuania; Leningrad and Moscow, USSR; Budapest, Hungary; Bucharest, Romania; and Dubrov nik, Yugoslavia. In 1976, the couple took what was to be their last trip together to India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. There they climbed the Himalayas and visited the city of Katmandu in Nepal. On their trip back they swung through Switzerland, visiting the cities of Geneva and Zurich. The next year the Goheens booked a tour to Australia, but cancelled because her husband was not enthused about travelling there. The next year, however, he became ill and the following year, 1979, he died. After a period of hesitancy and sorrow over the loss of her husband, Mary finally got herself off on a trip to Oberammergau, Germany, to visit the Passion Plays there, and a short tour to Scotland and Ireland. In 1981, Mary ventured to China. She traveled there again the next year, as was able to see the ancient Chinese terra cotta warriers, while they were still in the ground. The warriers, an amazing archeological find, were then in the process of excavation . While there Mary was also able to catch a glimpse of Britain’s Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in Tianamen Square. BACK TO SCHOOL In 1983 Mary went on the road in behalf of Soropitmist International, attending a Soroptimist convention in Istanbul, Turkey, and joining a tour to Greece, cruising the Greek Islands. In the winter of 1983-84 Mary went to Russia and traveled across Siberia by train, ending up in Japan. Mary said that in her train tour across Siberia, each passenger car had its own briquet fire in the floor. In 1984, she again traveled to the Oberammergau Passion Plays for a centennial celebration. In 1985 Mary took a series of short tours and traveled in the Northwest, and in 1986 went to EXPO World’s Fair in Canada and attended a Soroptimist convention in Seattle. In 1987 she went to Great Falls on Soroptimist business and finally was able to take that tour to Australia. 1988 brought Mary to another Soroptimist conven Jill Willard and Travis Hyatt were united in marriage July 14. 1990 in tion in Toronto, Canada.
