When those don't do the job or can't be fished ef fectively, what’s next? Go home and mow the lawn? Nah. More and more river-trout chasers these days are discovering the wonder fully thrilling results that await those who fish small diving plugs behind a Hot Shot side planer, a technique used by successful steelhead anglers for years. After all. what is a steelhead but a large trout? The Hot Shot side planer, manufactured by the Luhr Jensen tackle com pany of Hood River, is a buoyant surface planer which, by using the force of the river’s current, can pull the angler’s lure more than 100 feet out into the river. This technique allows anglers to slowly backtroll size 50 to 70 Hot Shots or similar plugs through the best trout-holding areas and to hold them there as long as they wish, keeping their offerings in the fish’s strike zone for a much longer period of time than with standard drift fishing or cast-and-retrieve methods. Eastern Oregon trout streams particularly suited to side planing with plugs could include the John Day, Umatilla, Grande Ronde and Deschutes rivers. Basically, most any river or large creek with steady current, medium to clear water conditions and a healthy trout population should not go ignored. On the Deschutes River from Pelton Dam down to Trout Creek, for ex ample, many anglers take advantage of the stonefly hatch there each late spring, when the three-to seven-pound trophy redsides of that river flock to its banks to gorge on the hapless bugs that fall from overhanging tree branches. But after the hatch subsides, angling pressure traditionally declines as the big fish move back out into deeper water and become less accessible to anglers. In this case, a side planer rigged with a diving plug becomes an excellent vehicle for anglers to dupe the big fish with what appeals to them: the most meal for the least amount of effort. “ These big fish-as they grow, they shift their preference in diet,” says Terry Luther, natural resources biologist for the warm springs Confederated Tribes there. “ They're not going to be jumping around for a size 20 cad dis when they (the fish) weigh five pounds; they’re going to be chomping down on a crawdad or a small fish or sculpins or something that is a lot meatier than what 99 percent of the people are throwing at them.” But plugs, as opposed to most other lures, can be just as effective on large trout when they are not in a feeding pattern. “ There truly is something magical about the vibrations of a plug,” claims Buzz Ramsey, renowned Salmonid-fishing expert and director of research and promotion for Luhr Jenson. “ Steelhead and trout-and really all fish species for that matter-are very territorial. The popular theory is that when you back troll these plugs downstream, the fish treat them as an invader to their environment or territory. They have only one thing to fight with— their mouths-and they strike these plugs savagely.” Hot Shot side planers are relatively inexpensive (around $6 or $7) and are fairly easily rigged, provided the instructions included with the device are closely followed. To achieve optimum lure action, it is important to run the planer 20 to 30 feet ahead of your plug, and to hold your rod tip high to prevent the line between you and the planer from entering the water. When fished properly, the unit offers anglers an exciting new means of tempting trophy river trout, oftentimes when the fish would be other wise inaccessible from the bank. Now, ask yourself: doesn't that beat mow ing the lawn?
