By Anne Morter “ The Dog Days of Summer” was the topic presented by Delta Huber at the lone Garden Club meeting held at the home o f Phyllis Ander son on June 13. “ Dog Days” refers to the period between July and ear ly September when gardening can be a trial. The ancients called it this because of the rising o f the “ dog star” which was closest to the sun. Delta said that mulching is especially important, using such materials as chips, grass clippings and all types of plant materials chop ped finely. In using wood chips, it is advisable to add nitrogen to the soil. In watering, it is best to water deeply then hold off for a time to allow the plants to be stressed so that their roots will reach deeper for the water. Spot water shallow rooted plants such as bee balm. If mildew is a problem, do your watering in the early morning. Some o f the old timers say to wash down your plants each morning for healthy plants. Flag Day was observed by reading the poem, "I Am the Flag.’’ It was noted that the United States has had eight different flags. Helen Martin and Loree Hubbard will be delegates to the Oregon Federation o f Garden Clubs meeting in Portland. They will help Blue Mountain D istrict #10 with placements at the state flower show.
