Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 9, 1990 Little League starts season By Anne Morter Willow Creek Little League kick ed off their season opening with a double header Saturday, May 5. The first game matched the lone Car dinals Little League team to the Heppner Braves on. The Cardinals lost 8-5. In the second game the Heppner Giants played the Condon Angels. The Giants came out victorious with a score of 10-6. Jim Swanson and Dick Allen are the coaches for the lone Cardinals. The team changed its name from the Indians to the Cardinals this year. The Cardinals have the following home games in the month of May: May 19 vs. Heppner Giants; May 21 vs. Condon Angels; May 23 vs. Heppner Braves; May 31 vs. Arl ington Cubs. Barney Lindsay BMCC ASG M ustangs beat Tigers in vice president double header, 7-0, 9-4 Barney Lindsay, son of Larry and Corrine Lindsay, has been elected student body vice president of Blue Mountain Community College. Barney ran on the campaign plat form that he was "dependable, honest, qualified and Irish.” Barney is an ag education major and is involved with the BMCC Livestock Judging team. Lindsay says he is excited about the oppor tunity to work with other ASG of ficers and in planning activities for BMCC. 4-H News Food Fun Cooking Club Bv Jessica VanWinkle, Reporter On March 24, the food Fun club members met with the ” 7 Mun- chers” and picked up a lot of trash on Main Street as a community ser vice project. On April 27 members planted a flowering plum shrub at Hager Park. On April 28, Food Fun 4-H’ers got together with the "7 Munchers" and had to “ show what you know.” Members all brought something they made out of the 4-H cooking books and played games. 676-5818 7,321 miles Other officers elected were: Becky Hawes-president; Melissa Langdon- corresponding secretary; Bill Dillon- recording secretary; Tina Durrcnt- publicity director; and Angie Bork-treasurer. Newly elected officers went on a retreat to Meadowood Springs April 27-30. The new BMCC officers met with this year’s current officers and planned activities for the 90-91 school year. The new officers set goals and exchanged ideas on im proving student representation. By Pete Pearson The HHS golf team had a home meet last week against Pendleton. Pendleton brought two teams to the meet. Pendleton 1 won the meet with a score of 285, Pendleton 2 totaled a 293 and Heppner’s top five shot a total of 324. Lance McMurphy from Pendleton was the medalist with 65. Rich Pet- Willow Creek Ladies May I, 1990 By this time (in our old age) we seniors know that living in the present is important but that planning for the future is no less important. To that end, the center’s board is just beginning an important project, setting up a trust fund similar to those in place for other senior centers in Eastern Oregon. Rollin Reynolds, former director of the Area Agency on Aging, met with us on Monday last to assist us in the process. The aim is to pro vide for the ongoing success of our center. This week: Our most exciting event is the golden wedding anniversary celebration of Millard and Florence Holt on Saturday at 1 p.m. In an era of prevalent divorce and broken homes, golden weddings can shine as beacons of stability. Congrats, to Holts. Also this Friday, at 9 a.m. is the cook’s food sale in our front room and from 2 to 4 p.m. is coffee hour. Next week: Quitters will be in the dining room from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday: all day the election board will be counting votes in the dining room with doors locked from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesday: noon dinner menu: lasagna with meat, broccoli, tossed salad with carrots, French bread, chilled pears, and oatmeal cookies. Server helpers will be from the Christian Church. Thursday: senior exercise classes will be held in the dining room from 12 noon to 12:30 p.m. Our office will be contacting all those who have registered, but others interested may also call 676-9030 or 676-9435. The class will meet regularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Britt went the distance, he pitched a two-hit shutout, his third shutout of the year. Britt struck out 15 Stanfield batters and walked on ly one. The Mustangs added three more runs in the third inning, one more in the sixth, and two in the seventh to give the Mustangs a 7 to 0 victory. Brandon Pedro had three hits for the Mustangs, and Tom Kenny, Slater Mitchell and the Britt brothers had two hits each. In the nightcap the Mustangs had Jim Kindle on the mound, Kindle pitched 4- ‘A innings, giving up four runs and striking out 10 batters. Scott Coe came in and struck out six batters to pick up his second save of the year. The Mustangs gave their pitchers all the support they needed in the top of the first inning when they erupted for seven runs. The Mustangs scored only two more runs the rest of the game but held on to get the win 9 to 4. The Mustangs are now eight and two in league play and are second place in the CBC standings.
