Garden clubs of the Oregon State Federation, of which the lone and Heppner clubs are members, are col lecting these flags for the “ Avenue of Flags" project for Willamette Na tional Cemetery, Portland. A considerable number have already been donated as well as con tributions for the poles. “ It is a beautiful sight to see them on display along the roadways within the cemetery on Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Veteran’s Day,” said Helen M artin, chairm an for Willamette National Cemetery Blue Mtn. District No. 10. "The Boy Scouts place small flags on each grave for these special days.” Any donation may be made to a member of any garden club ( Hepp ner, lone, Boardman. Echo, etc.,) to Helen Martin, lone, or they may be sent directly to Willamette National Cemetery, but in that case the district chairman would have no record of the donation. The name of the deceased veteran, branch of service, name and address and relationship to the donor should all accompany the donated casket flag. The donor will receive a cer tificate of appreciation from an of ficial of the cemetery. The Oregon State Federation of Garden Clubs have been landscap ing the cemetery for over 30 years and will continue to do so. A carillon bell tower has been erected. A tape project for playing bells is underway as well as the “ Avenue of Flags” project. “ A visit to Willamette Na tional Cemetery would be well worth your time,” said Martin. The Cardinals faced the cream of the Class B crop on Saturday at the State “ B” Invitational. With the stif- fer competition, the Cards had a tough time scoring. The girls chalk- ed up 28 points to finish in eighth place. The boys scored just one point and ended up well back in the pack. Danielle Stefani paced the girls team with a wire-to-wire victory in the 3000, running the distance in 11:55. She also placed fifth in the 1500 in 5:26. Both times are new school records. Jo Cupps threw the javelin 111 ’2” to finish second. The winner of that event is a familiar name to lone sports fans, Jessica Puckett. The 6’1” standout athlete from Mt. Hood Christian won the event with a throw of 140’9” , far outdistancing the field. Completing the girls scoring, Janie Cupps plac ed third in the high jump, jumping 4 ’6” . Gabe Garcia scored the only point for the boys, placing sixth in the 400 with a time of 54.5. The Cardinals next outing is the Big Sky track meet to be held Satur day, May 5, in Condon. Krein reached base and was hit in by Russell Britt. Britt was hit in by Mit chell, Mitchell was hit in by Tom Kenny and Kenny was hit in by Jason Britt to give the Mustangs an early 4 to 0 lead. That turned out to be all the Mustangs and pitcher Jim Kindle needed as he pitched a 1 hit shutout. The Mustangs added six more runs in the game including a 3-run double by Doug Devin. The Mustangs won 10-0 in five innings and improved there record to 6 and 2 in league play and 7 and 4 overall. The Mustangs are also currently ranked seventh in state according to the last coaches poll. Saturday’s game against Pilot Rock was rained out. C u rrin T otals • V By Jane Rawlins Good news: plans are now in place for an exercise class for seniors over 55. The class will be taught by physical therapist Rick Burrel and Mrs. Burrel. Exercises will be standing or sitting routines or a combination of the two. Classes will be held 12 to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning May 17 in the senior center dining room. There is a suggested donation of $4 per month to help cover expenses. Twenty-five have registered but there may be room for a few more. Call our office soon, 676-9030. This week: Friday. Shirley Haugen will represent us at an Intergenera- tional Conference in Portland. Saturday afternoon is the Sophia Struthers- Darrel Smith wedding reception. Next week: A full Monday is planned beginning at 10 a m. with the Sr. Center Board meeting with Rollin Reynolds to begin forming a Sr. Center trust fund. Quilters and Company will meet from 1-4 p.m. to complete a children’s quilt. Last week 24 potholders went to the elementary school. Cooks and bricks were covered with velvet to serve as door stops in our office. Heppner Garden Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the front room with a container planting demonstration by West Winds Nursery and “ Recycling Opportunities" by Virginia Sinclair of Milton-Freewater. The BMCC Knitting Class the last of this series, will be at 7:30 p.m. in the dining room. Tuesday, the class of 1950 will meet in the dining room at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at noon is the Mother’s Day dinner. The menu is baked ham with raisin sauce, mashed potatoes, fruit salad, cooper perry salad, hot rolls, and pudding. Last week our cooks were happy to report they received the big mixer they wanted at a very low cost. At 1:30 p.m. the Sr. Center Board meets in the office. At 7:30 p.m. VFW will meet in the front room. Thursday at 9 a.m. the Widowed Persons Service meets. Friday at 9 a m. the cooks will have their food sale and coffee hour will be from 2-4 p.m. in the front room. Saturday afternoon in the foyer and dining room a special celebration of Millard and Florence Holt’s golden wedding anniversary is planned. The activities committee announces that the second Sunday potluck par ty has been postponed from Mother’s Day to May 20. • • • 26 10 i 9 9 1 p / T • 3 i Pirates hold winning streak By Mikka Evans The Riverside Pirates kept their winning streak going by beating the Hermiston junior varsity 3-2. Riverside used all four of their key pitchers, Matt Andreason, Billy Byrd, Mike Tallman and Scott Timms, to keep them all in practice since this was the only game this week for the Pirates. Next week, the Pirates will get back into Columbia Basin Con ference play trying to maintain their winning streak. They met the Umatilla Vikings at Riverside on May 1 and will meet the Pilot Rock Rockets on May 5 in a double header at Riverside. HHS golf team competes By Pete Pearson The Heppner High School golf team competed in a meet at Milton- Freewater Monday, April 23. A se cond meet was scheduled at home Friday, but it was cancelled because of rain. At Milton-Freewater, Eric Hill was the medalist with a 69. Rich Pet tyjohn and Pete Pearson led Hepp ner with an 80 and 82. Scott Johnston shot a 94; Jason Hanna, 99; Shane M unkers, 107; Hiroki Tanaka, 108; and Chuck Rollis 120.
