May 19. 1908. she got a little more than she bargained for The husband she thought was in his thirties was actually 58. Accor ding to their son, Jim of Spray, his father moved his age back 20 years to appear younger when he moved to Canada. According to the family he looked much younger than his age and carried it off. The newlyweds homesteaded in Canada in 1908 and again in Spray in 1914 Despite their difference in age, the couple raised five children, Sarah of Bandon, Ruby of Foots Creek, Dave and Jim of Spray and Ray of Portland. They have 12 grandchildren and 24 great grand children. Daniel died in 1947. Jeanie, who recently celebrated her 99th birthday at Pioneer Memorial Nursing home in Hepp- ner, w as bom March 9, 1891 in On tario, the eldest of seven children of William and Elizabeth Forbes. Sisters Ella Elder, 90, of Foots Creek, and Caroline Loveness,79, Medford are also still living. Jim, who recently celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary tells the tale that his dad is nine years younger than his granddad and his son is 100 years younger. It unravels like this—Jim’s father, Daniel, was bom in 1856, nine years earlier than Jeanie’s father. Jim’s dad was 100 years older than Jim’s son, who was bom in 1956. Helping Jeanie celebrate her 99th birthday were her son, Jim and his wife, Effie, her oldest grandchild, Judy Bertsch of Stanfield and Jim’s teacher and friend of the family, Grace Younce. Grace’s father homesteaded across the creek from Jim’s dad. The family of a Butter Creek man is facing an uncertain future if they can’t get help from the community. Vern VanEtta, 61, has been diagnosed as having inoperable lung cancer and is expected to have only a short time to live. His wife, Marie, 39, and his three children, Randy, sixth grade, Nicole fifth grade and Ross, third grade desperately need a place in town to live so that Marie can care for her husband at home. He was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday, but requires special medical care. Marie and Vem were married around 13 years ago in Guadalajara, Mexico, but over several moves their marriage license has been lost. The couple was remarried in a ceremony at Pioneer Memorial Hospital on March 8. Marie is of Mexican descent from Mexicali. She speaks and reads some English, but does not have a driver’s license and so cannot drive to town from their home on Butter Creek. Marie’s mother and sister live in Mexicali and she still communicates BII-LS PAID OVER $500.00 - JANUARY 1990 ACCRUAL BASIS GENEREAL FUND Assoc of OR Counties . 1 2610.39 Bank of E.O ...................19960.71 Benjamin Franklin..........1706.16 1384.07 Columbia Basin ............ 1255.60 Benton County ....1 2160.40 CIS Devin Oil Co.................. 1274.82 Down’s Supply ............. 718.19 First Interstate ..............1003.58 Force 4 ...... .585.39 Heppner Gazette................669.16 Heppner Postmaster........ 2000.00 Howard Pettyjohn ....... 1879.17 IBM Corporation..............1677.18 Legislative Council .......1540.00 I-ott’s Electric ......... 1386.19 Massco Company ........3369.24 MCI Telecommunications.546.90 Morrow County ...... 1116.56 Morrow County ............833.33 Neimi Holland & Scott....2400.00 ..........10461.84 Oregon Dept, of Rev. . 4121.60 Oregon Micrographics .2534.00 Pacific Mutual Russell Oil Co................. 1375.99 Principal Mutual ...........739.26 Pioneer Memorial Hosp. .644.00 1615.29 Umatilla Co Fed Cr Un.3928.00 U.S. West Comm.
