The three-day seminar includ ed speaker George Okomurah of Okamurah Biological Institute in Sacramento, CA. His one-day class was about grain stored insect iden tification and proper methods of treating them. Pheramones are one of the new methods used for help ing locate and identify insects in food processing plants and warehouses. Jerry Beachall of Terminex, Inc. was a featured speaker on spills and proper containment of spills. Paulette Pyle of Oregonians for Food and Shelter spoke on public awareness and the proper and safe use of pesticides. A topic of concern for her was that environmentalist organizations, April 12, will be targeting the paper milk cartons us ed in our schools each day. A minute amount of by-product called Dioxin is found in the paper used in milk cartons. The paper cartons are coated with a thick layer of protec tive wax, and have passed standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration. Senator Mark Hatfield says there are 27 bills concerning food safety in Congress this year. “ Please invest your time to write letters of support or call our state senators and representatives. They are elected of ficials and they can’t do what we want them to do if they don’t hear from us,” says Jean Jepsen. “ Pesticides are big business—as a farming community, who knows and understands this better than all of us who must use them to produce insect free food. The general public is en couraged to continue the contact our state senators and representatives to support the proper and safe use of pesticides,” she said. Leslie Drummer, an insurance claims supervisor of Washington EX? spoke on “ risk retention’’ dealing with chemical liability insurance. Many chemical sales represen tatives spoke and demonstrated new products throughout the three-day seminar.
