Haugen and her husband recently came to Hcppncr from Nevada Prior to that Haugen lived in Portland Ironically. Haugen lived in Hcppner 45 years ago and returned after the death of her mother who was buried here Haugen's husband is from the Tri Cities “ I've been widowed three times.” she said. “ I'm a survivor and fac ing the possibility that it may happen again I'm becoming quite dedicated to this (the widowed per sons group ) We re very happy to be Kick.” she added “ I'm enthusiastic , . :<• * -1 » Shirley Haugen and hope to do some help here Haugen is in the process of com pleting training in counseling the newly widowed in obtaining medical, legal, mental health and other necessary aid She is a volunteer, but expenses incurred are paid through AARP Once she receives the name of a widowed person, she writes a letter introducing herself and indicating that she would like to call and stop by to visit Upon visiting with the widow or widower, she assesses the situation and determines what may he needed She usually contacts peo pic who have been widowed for 30 to 90 days The last training session for the current session of the Widowed Per sons Service program will be held March K at 9 a m at the St Patrick's Senior Center Two-Tr ackers The Two- Trackers horse club will host a clinic presented by Hal Sullivan Saturday and Sunday. March 3 and 4. at the fairgrounds covered arena, beginning at 9 a m Saturday will feature colt training and equipment selection and use Sunday will be spent on equitation and its use in various working areas such as roping, gaming and cutting While the riding participation is fill cd. spectators arc welcome There w ill he a $5 per day fee to help cover expenses North I atx Livestock ()n Sunday, Feb 25. the North lxx Livestock Club took a field trip to Karen and Terry Thompson's ranch At the Thompsons members saw a ewe give birth to twins The after noon was concluded with refreshments and a discussion of up coming events at the city park high teen memhers and 11 parents attend ed The next meeting will be Sun day. March 3 Colt basketball features Heppner and Ixxington boys and girls in the fourth through sixth grades Regular league games were played on Saturday mornings in January and Ecbruary and tourna ment seeds were determined from league standings The l ions and Hawks will open the tournament at H 30 a m with the winner advancing to a 10:30 a m game w ith the Colts who drew a first round bye Other first round action features the Bears ss Tigers game at 9:30 a m The winner will advance to an 11 30 game w ith the Eagles who also drew a first round bye A consolation game w ill follow al 12 30 p m an«.l the championship game will up off around I 30 p.m. Everyone is msited to attend and watch the “ future Mustangs and Fillies ” There is no admission charge Cub Scouts will be pros iding concessions. His parents had homesteaded there He farmed with his dad and brother until 1949, when he purchased a tarm north of lone In 1962. he sold the ranch to the State I .and Board and leased the Carl Troedson ranch, farming it until his last harvest in I97K He farmed a total of 50 years in Jefferson and Morrow Counties On Feb 22. 1941, he married Helen Horton of Astoria They have three children. Jean Brazcll, Ixx ington, Melvin. Moses lake, W’A , and Ralph, lake Oswego; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild He is a life member of the Oregon Wheat Growers league, serving on county and state level committees He spent 23 consecutive years in volvcd with the Suttle l a k e Methodist Camp site protect near Sisters, between 1934 and 1957. He has been a member of the lone city council and T V. co-op board He spent 10 years on the Morrow Coun ty School Board, also serving on slate committees. Hu is a member of the lone United Church of Christ serving on local, state and national committees and serving as a choir member and Sunday school teacher In 1959 he was choosen Morrow County "Father of the Year” .
