Lady Cards notch two wins SIX- Hrppnrr Gaiette-Times, Heppner, (>rrt(un Wednesday, January 17, 1990 Heppner Mustangs rally to beat Wasco co. Redsides, 66-55 Freshman win two By Bob Krein On Saturday. January 13, the Heppner Mustang» traveled to Maupin to face the Wasco County Redsides The Mustangs coming off of a heart-breaking loss, came out a little »low, and trailed by two points at the end of the first quarter The Mustangs then rallied and had a seven point lead at halftime With good defense and offense, the Mustangs built their lead to 11 at the end of the game The final score was Heppner, 66, and Wasco Co 35 The Mustangs had four players in double figures, lead bv Russell Brut with IX points and eight assists Now 3 and I in CBC play and 6 and 4 overall, the Mustangs will face the Weston McEwen Tiger Scots this Friday, Jan 19 at Heppner By Ann Morler By Pete Pearson The Heppner freshmen won two games last week, the first one over 4 M ........ Helix jumped oul to an 11-2 lead at the end of the first quarter as Heppner was trying to find their range But Heppner came roaring hack in the second quarter on Sc»at Coe’s 11 points, to take a 20-18 lead into the locker room In the third quarter Heppner gain ed two more points on Helix to lead 34-30. The fourth quarter w as an ex citing one as Heppner missed free throw after free throw to keep Helix in Ihc game, hut Heppner held on to win Scott Coe led all scorers with 23. while Holton lead Helix with 10 The freshmen’s next game is Thursday. Mustangs let win slip away Fillies beat Redsides; tie for first in league The lone girls varsity had a vic torious weekend playing two of their weaker Big Sky League opponents. Echo and Arlington The Cardinals were able to notch two wins and divide the court time evenly between the veterans and the younger players Their record is 4-0 in league play and 9-1 overall lone opened the weekend Friday night hy overwhelming a hapless Echo squad 45-16 Echo was unable to field a team last year and has been w ithout a junior high team for three years The Cougars were not only short on manpower hut weak in the fundamental areas The downside for the Lady Car dinals was that they came down to their opponent level and did not play good basketball, according to coach Dana Heideman The girls lacked in tensity and made mental crTors hut were still able to command the game The Cardinals led 13-6 at the end of the first quarter and held a 21-11 margin at the half A second half scoring blitz put the game per manently out of Echo’s reach as the Cougars managed only five second half points to the Card’s 23 Jo Cupps, playing just two quarters, made 17 points to he high- point scorer for the game Kan Morgan added nine and Amy Wagenhlast chipped in eight Jo Cupps also led in rebounds, pulling down II hoards Freshman guard. Cyrstal Minster added nine as the Cards initrchoundcd the Cougars, 59-23 Darcce Padherg and Nancy Morler managed four steals each to lead the l.ady Cardinals The game wasn’t pretty in the eyes of lone coach Dana Heideman. hut it allowed him to try w»mc different plays and player combinations He also found the game to he a good chance to give his younger players Mime playing time Heideman said senior Jo Cupps had a good game, gathering 17 points ami 11 rch»*umls in just two quarters Saturday night, Jo Cupps needed lust two quarters to pmir in 24 points and lead the Lady Cardinals to a 62-32 thrashing of the Arlington Honkers Once again, coach Heideman was able to rest his five starting seniors for two quarters and play his younger players, with pleas mg results The Cards outscored Arlington, Nancy Morter looks for shot against Echo 18-5. in the first quarter with Jo Cupps contributing 12 of those points Their halftime edge was 27-12 In the third quarter, the five seniors. Jo Cupps. Mary Cupps. Darcce Padherg. Linda Morter and Amy Wagenhlast combined to score 25 points with everyone making at least one bucket Impressive team work and a tenacious half court press made the difference TTic younger players finished off the marathon- length contest which saw Arlington commit V* fouls, sending lone to the free throw line 40 times Heideman was pleased with his entire team’s performance He prais ed the play of his starters, saving they worked very well together ami concentrated on teamwork He also singled out s»*phonxire Kari Morgan for putting together a good, all around game The l-ady Cardinals travel to Con don this Friday and host Culver on Saturday Heideman predicts closer more exciting games this weekend By Scoff Johnston After playing imir games in Col umhia Basin Conference action, the Heppner Fillies arc 4 0 and tied for first place with Weston McEwen The Fillies remained unbeaten in league play when they traveled to Maupin.
