Imgon. plead guilty to Possession of a Con trolled Substance before Circuit Court Judge Pro-Tern Ralph Currin as a result of an October. 1987. in cident Judge Currin ordered a pre- sentence investigation and continued the matter for sentencing pending completion of the pre sentence investigation Billy Cole fucker, 26. Hcmusion. plead guilty to Criminal Trespass in the F irst Degree as a result of a June 1989, incident in Fioardman Judge Ralph Currin imposed hut suspend cd a '(» day jail sentence, placed the defendant on one year probation and ordered him to pay restitution on a number of outstanding checks. S chofield B arracks, Hawaii Brown is die son of Paul C Brown of Heppner The colonel is a 1969 graduate of Oregon State University, Corvallis In 1975. he received a master's degree from Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, Wash r * r •» On occasion. 1 have devoted this col umn to a person, usually an acquain tance o f mine that for some reason has made an unusual impression I ran in to an oki friend just recently that you should know about I’ve known this fellow all my life, it seem* He was a friend of the family long before I can remember I saw him in town the other day I was shopping for some hardware for some project or another on the farm I hadn't seen him in afiout a year, hut he looked just the same as always You know how some people arc sort of ageless, when they reach middle age they just seem to hold until all of a sudden they're oid My friend isn't old yet. ju*t that non specific middle age He's a little older than I am of course, hut I seem to be catching up Like me. he's a little overweight I haven't worried about that for years though Ever since one of those cute Palmer girls told me in the Cour thouse Clerk’s office. “ Oh we expect you more mature gentlemen to become a hit portly " What an endearing thing to say to a fat old man And like me. he's trying to he modern with a full heard, although his is a little more grey than mine And he lets it grow a little longer He called to me from clear across the store He's the kind of guy that can do that without causing a big stir You know the type We said our hellos, paid for our nuts and holts or whatever it was and went to have a cup of coffee And to talk We talked about the weather, you know what ours has been He lives north of here vimewherc now, I don't remember if he told me just where, and he’s had snow and cold and said we should he thankful to have such mild winters, even when we consider them had I told him about the prison issue and how folks seemed to he very strongly in favor or very strongly opposed I thought maybe there had been some deep divisions among us over if Ho said strong Icelmgs like that usually lead to a better understanding of each other and a closeness among us that would not have come otherwise He hoped that would he our experience Farther from home, we talked about the children in the Third World and how tragic it was that many were starving He was really hopeful that now that the story was on the front page, some relict would be forthcom ing He was really happy about the hlmxllcss revolution in Eastern Europe and how those folks were tasting a little freedom and control over their own destiny for the first time in years And all so suddenly and without loss of life on cither side We talked ah*>ut our families His was fine he said He seemed more interested in mine He was really pleased that Franc ic and I are still together after all these years Said I should make special effort to show her that I’m pleased about that too His mood w as beginning to affect me as I spoke affectionately about Harold, off to college this fall and doing us proud And l-aurel. leading cheers for the JV team and doing better at school than ever before He said a special token of my affection for them was in order.
