the least o f which is being married

head was sopping wet and there was
no hair dryer to be found After scar
ching the house from top to bottom,
a yell across the pasture to my
spouse solved the mystery Seems

maimng If you've hern tugging at your
hair follicles trying to decide what to
get your outdoors enthusiast for
Christmas, or if you're looking for a
tactful way to hint at what you'd like
to find in your stocking, read on
Folks o f the sporting genre arc a rather fickle lot to try to buy for. not
just any fishing rod, ski hoots or hunting coat will do And though most
will agree " i t ’ s the thought that counts,” just about any fisherman can
tell you that trying to crank a reel with the handle located on the wrong
side is akin to picking your nose with a baseball mitt.
Several years ago a buddy and I were browsing among all the wonder
ful goodies at a large sporting goods store when a woman's frantic voice
beckoned from behind W e turned and saw an attractive yet frcn/icd
middle aged woman clutching a wad o f camouflaged canvas and aluminum
tubing
"Excuse m e." she pleaded, "hut does this look like something you would
use?"
Silence Then, "U h . that depends " My partner was understandably ap
prehensive and glanced quickly about for Alan Funt o f Candid Camera

"W e ll the hox said it's a collapsible chair or something." she said, "w ith

see. my husband likes to hunt, but I haven't the slightest notion what to
get him for that I'm afraid I don't know very much about (his stuff
We took another look al the contraption and assured her she had done
well in consulting us (W’e had always wondered what it would be like
to become sporting goods advisors, and here was our chance ) After Icar
rung a hit more about her husband's hunting preferences and helping her
select a more appropriate gilt. I had to reflect on how flawless my own

[offer the convenience o f ordering the more difficult to find items, many

plements also serve well
Let's examine just how sound the " X 'e s tor \ M as" concept really is
first, forget aNiut buying for the sportsman "w h o has everything

(or she) doesn't exist If a person has the right catalog in front of him,
he can easily supply you with more Christmas ideas than you ever dream

Second, while it may he difficult to get a sports buff to come up with
ideas for you o ff the top o f his head, there are few things he would rather
do than pour through his favorite catalog Witness him. catalog in hand,
barely staggering from the bathroom because he "b ro w s e d " lor so long
that his legs fell asleep, dreaming o f the whimsical day he can try one
o f tNise and one of those and

Finally, since he's sure to supply you with so many X cs to choose from,
you haven't lost the element o f surprise Just because I X'cd those snazzy

stands has placed a lot of stress on
these two tree species The recent
three-year drought has placed an ad
ditional stress on them and the long

Carlson assisted Donna and Roland
Bergstrom spent three weeks touring
Nith the North and South Islands
The history o f the islands is very d if
ferent from Australia, their nearest
neighNir The Maori natives are
through! to have come from an
island in the Pacific and to have
Polynesian background They came
in seven canoes and from this came
the seven tribes of Maori When the
British took over control o f the
islands the Maori signed away all
their rights to the land for the pro
tection o f the British From then on
they were full citizens At the pre
sent time the tribesmen are trying to
get some special considerations
because so many emigrants from
southeastern countries are coming
and the push for land and work is af
testing their economy
The Bergstroms visited New
/«aland in August which would be
similar to our February so the
weather was rather cool, particular
ly on the south island The principal

and Japanese There are very few
