Gates chosen yard of month

The Kenny and Candi Gates home
was chosen as yard of the month by
the Lexington Garden Club
The mobile home, located on
Black Hone, was insulted in spring
of 1977 Work on the yard started
then also
The willow tree in the front yard
came from a twig cut from Ken's
mother's yard in Kamiah. ID in
1975 Then shrubs, flowers and

grass were planted to complete the
yard.
The drilled pole fence was put
together in the evenings after work,
one section at a time It was a fami­
ly project to complete the fence
Roses, flowering shrubs and a
variety of plants make up the color­
ful yard, along with the ground
covering

Beginning on Wed., Sept 6, the
Banks of Eastern Oregon in Hepp^
ner and lone will host a small show
ing of handcrafted items made by
local fibre artists This mini show
will he presented as a preview to
' By My Hand", the main fibre arts
show which is scheduled to open on
Oct I at the Morrow County
Museum in Heppner Bank of
Eastern Oregon and many other
local businesses are helping to spon
sor "By My Hand" this fall
Country Fibre Artists Guild of
Morrow County is the hosting guild

crafted items made by local guild
members would generate more in­
terest in the main fibre arts show
coming up nest month " stated

Items seen in this mini-show and
those entered in "By My Hand" will
fall into one of 4 categories hand
woven, handspun (knitted and
cnx'hcted). hand felted or basketry
Entries will be judged prior to the
Heppner opening and reception
Then the show travels to luGrande
and Pendleton
Members of Country Fibre Artists
Guild invite everyone to stop by
Bank of Eastern Oregon offices to
view these unique handc rafts during
the nest couple of weeks and to mark
your calendars for the main show on

The Heppner Elementary Grade school
held their first positive recognition awards
ceremony on Friday, Sept. 1 in the Multi-
Purpose room Introduced and welcomed to
the school were students new to Heppner
Elementary grades 1 through 4 Front row,

Jerry and Sue Baker received the

August Yard of (he Month
Mrs. Baker is the former Sue
McClaren of Pilot Rock and she and
Jerry, ion of Dale and Carol Baker
of Lexington have lived in this loca
turn for two years
They did minor remodeling to the
house and landscaped the yard It it
a neat and clean fenced in yard with
an underground sprinkling system

The Bakers have one daughter to
help enjoy this home
Teachers were certified

ten by Ed Glenn last week stated that
substitute teachers hired during last
school year’s teacher's strike were
hired illegally It was staled that the

substitute teachers did not have the
proper credentials to teach school
According to school district of­
ficials all teachers had proper
teaching certificates when hired and
were in fact hired legally

Don Lott of Heppner shot an ex­
plosive first round even-par 65 to
pace the field to a comfortable seven
stroke victory at the 2 1 si annual Kin
rua Hills Men's Golf Tournament
August 26-27
Lott, the tournament's defending
gmvs champion, held a 10-stroke ad
vantage over eventual runner-up
Vcm Matthews of Condon after the
first round, and finished with a nine
over-par 74 on Sunday. Matthews
tried to mount a charge Sunday on
Lott's lead but fell short with a 71
on the final round
Ron Bowman, also of Hcppncr,
defended his first flight net cham­
pionship with a net three-under par
127; five strokes ahead of runner up
John Edmundson Bowman also held
a large nine stroke lead going into
the second round and coasted in to
victory with a net one under par 64
In the Calcutta, which is based on
Sunday's top two man team scores.
Rill Berray and Ron Bowman took
top team honors with the team of Bill
O 'D o n n ell and Pat Bunyard
finishing second Frank Pearson and
John Edmundson were third in the
twelve-team field and Ardin Olson
and Bill Dyer were fourth

Selected youth hunters must be ae
companies! by one adult (age 18 or
older) on the day of the hunt The
adult may also hunt No blind tees
will be charged for youth hunters
Adults must pay the $5 blind fee
(52 50 fee for Golden Age and
Golden Access cardholders)
Youth hunters will select hunting
blinds one and one half hours prior
to state shooting time at the hunter
check station on Paterson Ferry
Road on the morning of the hunt
Following the youth hunter blind
selections, standby hunting will he
permitted
