" and also in parts o f vnithern Canada and nonhern M exico W isdom , a long time biologist for the Bureau o f l.and Management who a few years ago transferred over to the Forest Service to begin research on the president setting Starkey project in northeast Oregon, said that while elk on ce ranged over nearly all the United States, they were not entirely the same critter and taxonomists have since divided these Wapiti popula lions into six different subspecies the I astern elk. the Manitoban elk, the M erriam 's elk. the fule elk. the Rocky Mountain elk and the Roosevelt elk "T h e y 're all the same species they arc Cersus I laphus but they were different su b species," he said Many elk enthusiasts believe that since elk were once so visible throughout (he Great Plains that such was the original range of our Rocky Mountain elk. which later were pushed into the timber and mountains by ; increasing numbers o f white settlers "T h a t's |ust not tru e ," W isdom says "T h a t’ s where the myth com es in Rocky Mountain elk have always existed in very healthy numbers for as far b.uk as we know elk to have existed in the Rocky Mountain states Phe thinking is. at least based on the records that taxonomists have looked at. that the Manitoban elk was actually the plains animal, found in the areas like Oklahoma. Kansas. Nebraska, the Dakotas and up into Saskatchewan and Manitoba " W isdom said the Eastern subspecies o f elk were found from just west of the Mississippi River to the eastern seaboard, while the M erriam 's elk ranged through what is today the southwestern states o f Arizona. New Mex ico and down into M exico O f course. Roosevelt elk still occupy many ' mountainous areas o f the extreme west coast, and the smaller Tule elk can be found in isolated areas o f central California O f the six subspecies, the Pastern and M erriam 's varieties today arc extinct "B u t as far as having pushed elk into the mountains, there has been no such thing at a ll," W isdom said "T h ere have been no major population displacements of elk caused by man Basically, we just wiped out the elk populations in areas we settled in heavily "R e a lly , what happened w a s ." W isdom continued, "w h e n the white man arrived, he settled in the flat ground and most productive areas, which eliminated all the populations of our Eastern elk first, since that's where we first settled Then the next subspecies to be impacted was the Manitoban elk. which was primarily found out in the Plains states O f course, elk out there didn't stand a chance, so their numbers and distribution range became restricted to parts of Canada in several National Parks, where they remain protected to d a y ." W isdom said that while the Rocky Mountains have always been home to Rocky Mountain subspecies o f elk. their range was historically broader than it is today. from the Great Basin deserts during the w inter to the high mountain summer ranges " S o we may have changed their migratory patterns by displacing them from some o f that low elevation, sagebrush desert type winter range, but their numbers arc still doing very well today They were nearly extirpated from many parts of their range from over hunting in the late IXOtk and early 1400s, but they've done really well in terms o f a com eback " W isdom suggested elk aficionados wishing to learn more about the mighty wapiti should obtain a copy o f ' The Elk o f North A m erica " by Stackpolc Books The book, a compilation o f research by many leading elk experts, was edited by Jack Ward Thomas, currently a c o leader of the 10-year Starkey Project, which is studying the interactions o f elk. deer and cattle in the wilds, the habitat preferences and requirements of each species and their reaction to man's usage o f the land Rocky Mt.
