Releasing Fish
"The worst part about all them
fishin' shows is. they go to all that tn>u
hie of catchin’ 'em, then they just turn
'em loose''*
In E astern O regon at least,
statements like this flow like spring
runoff wherever fishing is spoken The
practice of catch and release angling
will prohaMv never catch on with many
folks
And who can blame them ' In this
life long scramble for the almighty dollar, most people get to fish a great
deal less than they 'd actually like to Enjoying fxxh the sport and it's bounty.
when they finally do go out the last thing on their minds is throwing that
fresh fish hack into the drink and forfeiting a delicious dinner
Then there's the scum- the opportunistic hog who will sit right there
and haul fish out for as long as they are biting |ust because they are biting
while he puzzles over what to do w ith the grow ing heap He may or may
not take home a few. hut he certainly doesn't want to clean the whole mess,
v* he'll try to find someone who will take them Often he'll decide it's
too much bother and simply discard what he doesn't want
Several years ago a particular tiny, privately owned reservoir would hoot
out tn»phy rainbow trout in the five to seven pound class to anglers allowed
to fish there But when several anglers from another town convinced the
owner (who rarely fished, or even checked on the place) to grant them
access, they quickly destroyed the little utopia by hauling home up to 30
of the giant fish per day, often hy still fishing with three or tour rods each
What on earth could anyone want with so much fish ’ Chances arc. they
raised a beautiful garden It is for such folks that hemorrhoids were
developed
*
Still, most anglers don't abuse their fish catching abilities, and keeping
a few (w ithin the legal limit) for the table is the aim of many Surprisingly
though, few anglers properly care for the fish they intend to eat One of
the worst and most common -mistakes is to allow a dead fish to remain
in the water Dead fish should he taken from the water and kept as cool
as possible Putting your catch on icc is the best method of ensuring quali
ty fillets Some experts first stun each fish with a sharp blow to the head,
then cut into the gills with a sharp knife, which drains most of the blood
from the meat Fish treated in this manner then chilled with ice will stay
fresher longer and prove much more flavorful
For those of us who have the opportunity to fish quite often, keeping
every thing wc catch would he impractical Releasing a nice fish not only
helps perpetuate the species, it affords many anglers more satisfaction than
if they had killed it To best the critter then watch it swim away unharmed
is thrill enough for many conscientious sportsmen, while a quick photo
snapped |ust before the release w ill pros ide a much better record than will
a dead fish
f ish to he released should he handled as little as possible. Acids from
human skin can remove the protective slime coat from a fish's body,
resulting in an infection and often death The best method is to leave the
fish in the water while unhooking it needle-nose pliers or a similar device,
thus releasing it without ever touching the animal with your hands
At the risk of receiving hate mail and death threats from the trout purists,
let me say most warmwatcr species bass, for example -are heartier than
trout and other salmomds, and can generally he lifted from the water for
slightly longer pern>ds for unh«x»king and pictures. Warmwatcr fish can
he photographed, with trout, stick to a quick snapshot In either case, photos
should he taken w ith yiuir catch held over the water to avoid injury should
the fish wriggle free and fall
