I had been asked to take one o f the garbage trucks belonging to long time fishing and hunting buddy Calvin Clark up to the fire camps to relieve them o f the mountains o f refuse normally generated by such natural disasters It seemed Cal had been call cd to run a Cal on the fire at the fire camp Now, in the wee hours o f the morning 13 days later, here I remain scribbling on a coffee stained notebook, trying to crank out yet another column from the confines o f my smelly deli wagon as a yawning young camp crew delivers endless bundles o f trash from a ».amp that never sleeps During the first few days the action and excitement was non stop From where we sat at Reynolds camp, on the back side o f the blaze. frequent ‘ ‘ blow-ups’ ’ on the ridge just above camp were clearly visible and equal ly riveting as flames erupted over 100 feet into the air As this is being w ritten, the (lames have all but died out. and crews are busy mopping up and cutting fire lines around unburned tracts o f timber within the Little Baldy fire 's 9.230 acre perimeter My rolling refuse run ner and me have since been reassigned to base camp at Summit Prairie A ll that's left o f Reynolds Camp now are a lew scattered wood chips (put there to control the dust) which w ill later be mixed with concentrations o f nitrogen and disked into the soil The speed with which Reynolds Camp both went up and came down can only he described as the epitome o f modern camping procedures Bishop Services, the food caterers there, were especially impressive Thanks to these innovative folks I was witness to one o f the quickest and most efficient ways o f erecting a large wall tent I've ever seen In truth. 1 their method differs little from my own except they do it in the daylight an interesting twist I have never attempted The food, commensurate with that o f the finest restaurants (at least the finest restaurant a w riter can afford), was prepared in an 35 to 40-foot semi trailer and served cafeteria style from a 30 toot trailer with windows running the length o f one side Another 40-foot trailer provides storage and dish washing facilities, while several other 4 0 to 50-fix it "re fe rs " kept foodstuffs fresh So impressed was 1 with this setup that I immediately began considering ways to lash sim ilar facilities to Decker pack saddles so as to be afforded such comforts in elk camp When it came time for Reynolds camp to break up, or "d e m o b iliz e ," at least eight huge tents, the entire kitchen unit, the showers, the opera lions and ground support offices, dozens o f portable toilets and septic lac ill jty and one large white garbage truck was packed up and reads to m il by about 12 00 which, by m ilitary time is still 12 00 (after noon, however | it starts getting tricky). Here at base camp, a somewhat larger facility which should also be win ding down w ithin the next few days (probably be history by the time you read this) all is (airly quiet From this position on the mountain, not one wisp o f smoke can be seen o f the still-sm oldering fire complex that employed over 1200 people, nine engines, eight water tenders, five dozers, four french hens, three helicopters, two air tankers and one large white- garbage scow In these remaining days I am content with enjoying delicious food, compacting and hauling staggering amounts o f trash and keeping a daily count o f the number o f people who trip over tent ropes And who knows, perhaps next week we’ ll be back to the business of hunting and fish MU.__________________________________________________ | * • ' i Irrigon Lioness donate to center by Mark Hagrtt • *•* < «■•• » * • lie p p n e r Gazette-Tim es.
