The Russian wheat aphid tRW A)
has been a very nasty pest on spring
crops this year, though not a very
had one on winter wheal Many
spring grains have been sprayed
twice and are infested again It is
simply not economic to spray for the
RWA that often in spring gtains
Another problem is that the msec
ticides arc not terribly effective on
leases that arc tightly rolled ansi arc
c h lo ro tic . T he plant is not
translocating very much material in
that leaf, and hcncc the aphids six not
get the necessary dose o f pesticide
And a heavier dose isn't the answer
because the plant won't translocate
a heavier dose any better than the
lighter one
I .ate in the season it is best to
spray with the least expensive
material available, since the systemic
action isn't nccslcd for persistance
nor is it very effective in the tightly
rolled leaf It isn't needed because
once the wheat is in the soft dough
stage o f growth, the aphid can no
longer affect yield If the wheat is
close to maturity . a persistant msec
ticidc isn't necessary
