Hermiston. were killed m an accident which occurred at 9 12 a m Monday on Buttercrcek Highway, south of Interstate K4 one hall mile from the Highway 207 interchange A van belonging to Mechanic, Inc of Hermiston southbound on Highway 27 with three men aboard Cfts involved in an accident with a Ford Ranger pickup, belonging to Allison which was northbound I he pickup immediately burst into flames Several people that were passing by slopped to try to assist in (Hitting out the fire Firefighters worked tor over an hinir to try and tree the three men in the van The other two men involved were Edward Ralph Longhorn. Echo and Brian l ee Butler. Hermiston They were taken to ( hhh I Shepherd Hospital in Hermiston for treatment of their injuries Oregon State Police have ihe ac cident under investigation Hall’s granddaughter wins state award P*w«o by CI«H »’■O f — x A number of visiting dignitaries,( lone Elementary students) enjoy dancing to the music at the Inauguration Ball last Friday An The lone Elementary School celebrated the 200th anniversary of George Washington's inauguration with an inaugural ceremony of their own on January 20 The event began with a military dnll by the third and fourth grade students as they presented the American flag Following this the dnll team Mood at attention while Becky Wagcnblast and Joe Baker an nounced the dignitanes as they entered the hall To open the inauguration, Nathan Rietmann, as Rev Billy Graham, gave the invocation Jake McElligott portrayed Chief Justice Rehnqutst and gave the oath of office to Presi dent Bush, John Doherty Mellissa McElligott as Mrs Bush held the Bi Me for the ceremony. Marie Tworek as Justice Sandra Day O'Connor swore in Steven Allen as Vice Presi dent while Lynde Minster as Mrs Quay Ic held the Bible Students tak ing the part of other dignitanes at the ceremony were Kandy Scott, Sen Bob Packwood, Andrea DeBoer as Mrs Packwood; Andrew Anderson. Sen Mark Hatfield. Macy Childers. Mrs Hatfield. Bnan Papineau. Rep Bob Smith; Rschelle Whitmore. M rs Bob Sm ith; Stephanie H aguew ood. Sec. o f Labor, Elizabeth Dole; Kara Miller was Oregon's Honorable Mary Deitz After taking the oath of office as president. John Doherty gave his presidential speech and everyone present sang 'America' This was followed by the Grand March per formed by all students in grades one through five. Fire Monday at DeSpain residence A fire Monday around 5 p m resulted in approximately $500 of dam age, at the Boh DeSpain residence at 585 N. Gale Street in Heppner The cause o f the fire was a faulty flue, wood attached to the flue ceil mg joist '' Prompt action by Aloha DeSpain saved further loss another 10 minutes would have resulted in a full scale fire,” said Fire Chief Fom e Burkenbine. Barbara Collins. Jeri McElligott. Laura Broderick and Betty Rietmann all felt this was a memorable esent in their on going class studies of government and the presidents Jodi Hall, granddaughter of Gene and Harriet Hall of Heppner recctv ed a check and plaque lor winning the Pennsylvania Stale EFA Agricultural Sales and or Service Proficiency Award The award was presented at the mid winter EFA Convention held in Harrisburg Penn sylvama The program is designed lo recognize EFA members lor achievement in activities leading to careers in agriculture Jodi's winning application was centered an Hind three major projects lhat she conducted during the previous year She was the top sales(H‘rson during the State College FFA annual citrus fruit sales K.us ing and selling poinsettias occupied her time during the laic fall and into ihe Christmas season She then con centrated her project time on grow ing and marketing of spring bedding plants Other EFA accomplishments in dude being named the local Star Green hand, winning the regional Floriculture Record Book Contest, placing sixth in the Stale Creed Speaking Contest, securing spots on both the Stale EFA Band and the State FFA Chorus and being a finalist in the Slate luleni Review TTie State College sophomore is also active in several otticr school , k nviiies including basketball, ir.uk, Student Council, Student Advisory Council and Ihespían productions Jmli is the daughter o!
